  • You learn something new ...

Last week I forgot to take a packed lunch with me and was working on a large garden all day, so I decided to stop off at a local bakery to buy a sandwich.

Two pleasant young girls behind the counter - probably late teens or early twenties, one girl smiled and this was the conversation:

Girl: Can I help you sir?

Me: Yes please, have you a sandwich or roll with no Mayo or Meat?

Girl: Hmmm, we have Turkey and Tomato

    Me: (pauses to collect myself)

    Me: Turkey is Meat

    Girl: Is it!?

Me: Yes, what did you think it was?

Girl: Well, I thought it was like Chicken

Me: (turning a purple colour as I try to stifel hesterical laughter) Chicken is meat

    Girl: Never?

Me: (now almost wetting myself) It is!

Girl: Well you learn something new everyday

    ... we have cheese

Hmmm.. It could be argued that 'poultry' is a seperate entity to 'meat' - it is often classified seperately, i.e meat, fish and poultry. So maybe she wasn't dense, just confused?!

My nephew thinks milk comes from plastic bottles. I tried to tell him that it came from cows but no he is not having it - shame on my sister!!

I find it really sad, but she doesn't see a problem.

I often have the right money in my hand when I purchase items in shops and they look at me as if I've just landed.....yes - I can add up things in my head and work out how many different coins it takes to make that amount in sterling.

It is shameful and disappointing that calculators are allowed in schools especially primary school!
