    Wassamatta Zaz????
LOL - I'm in the middle of revising for tomorrow night and my brain is fried.

Don't worry - I got him back in advance a couple of weeks ago. He's just trying to make up for all those lost opportunities

It is shameful and disappointing that calculators are allowed in schools especially primary school!
The only calculator I was allowed to use when I was at school were my fingers.

I don't know what would happen if they had to work things out in lbs & ozs & in £.s.d.

Luckily; I didn't even come over here until all that [the money] was sorted [1973]; but I still bake my soft sweet goodies [bread and cakes] using lbs and ozs; it just seems to be better proportions than g/kg.

                Metric ..........................simple!
                Imperial.......................difficult (even with a calculator.)

Maybe, but us oldies used to manage Imperial without calculators - like most things practise makes it easier. That's why the money thing went well - you had no choice. Multiple choice (weights and measures) means some of us stick to the way we first learnt (me specially with fabric, I can only work it out mentally if I use yards as I know what a yard looks like, metres are a bit bigger and I can just about cope with them, but I can't visualise 4cm for example).

Good quiz question(without a calculator) how many inches in a mile?
It is really a general knowledge question as the answer is on any old 1" to a Mile ordnance survey map.

                    Answer 63,360.

We use calculators in our (9 year olds) class: you have to know what you're inputting in order to get the right answer though. Teachers are always more interested in the "working out" than the "right" answer.

We've only used the calcs once in a year, and it might cheer you to know that the children actually prefer not to use the calcs, because they are difficult to use unless you already know the basics of adding and subtracting.

When I was a student I did a brief stint at BHS in Manchester, working on the sandwich/pick and mix counter. Numerous times I had teenagers coming in and putting a pile of coins on the desk, asking me what I could buy for 'that', or holding a couple of choccie bars and handing me some money and asking 'Do I have enough?'

That was more than 10 years ago, so I don't want to think about how it is, now.

My first job when I was 13 was working in a bakery, where we had to add everything up in our heads before using the till... that sharpened up my maths!! It was only 16 years ago as well!

Is it really? I mean, yes, if they were being used in place of traditional arithmetic like long divisions and long multiplications, but they aren't. The only time my daughter (9) has ever used a calculator in school was when they were checking there own work in a group. The older 2 (12 & 15) have to have a scientific calculator, but then so did I! The reason for that isn't because they aren't taught how to do it the 'old way', but because they're taught to do most things both ways. They're going to look a bit ridiculous if they go on to do a job in research or something, and don't know how to do complicated calculations on a scientific calculator aren't they?
My eldest is in the top stream for both Maths and Sciences, so it certainly isn't doing him any harm...

I am not at all surprised having had similar lots of times when asking for things with no meat in.

A lady I used to live near didn't know that creatures were animals - she thought they were different! lol
