  • Great expectations

I like a good hot curry, in fact I'd almost go as far to say it's probably my favourite food, and for someone that doesn't really "do" favourites, that's quite something.

Anyhoo, LadyWayne and Bean have gone up North for a few days, and as I tend to "forget" to cook when I'm alone (I usually have other things to do) LadyWayne has bought a couple of "ready" meals.

Whenever we order/go out for a curry I'll have something towards the top end of the heat spectrum - vindaloo, or something similar. Had some fantatsic curries in Sri Lanka and The Maldives, even had fish curry for breakfast once in The Maldives. I digress...

Of the two meals I have, one is a Phal from ASDA I think. Now, I'm expecting it to be nearer to the vindaloo I usually have, or a jalfrezi at best as.

Who reckons I'm going to come a cropper and burn my insides?

I have a theory (shared with the dude at our local Indian) that Phal doesn't really exist, and that it was just developed for the "I'll have the hottest thing on the menu" after being out for some lagers mentality.

I'm looking forward to it, but am fearful - not of the heat, but of the prospect of disappointment.

I could fall phal of my own expectation I know.

Phall (sometimes spelt as phaal, phal or paal) is a British Asian Indian curry dish, which originated in Indian restaurants in the UK, and is not to be confused with the char-broiled, gravyless, finger food phall from Bangalore.[1] It is one of the hottest forms of curry regularly available, even hotter than the Vindaloo,[2] using a large number of ground standard chili peppers, or a hotter type of chili such as scotch bonnet or habanero. Typically, the dish is a tomato based thick curry and includes ginger and optionally fennel seeds.[3]

The phall has achieved notoriety as the hottest generally available dish from Indian restaurants. It is claimed that the name is derived from phallus to signify the machismo of a man who can eat such hot food.[7]

I find the Asda curries to be hotter than the restaurant equivalents mostly, except perhaps the South Indian restaurants, to which they are probably heat equal.

I don't think you will be disappointed

I didn't think it would be anywhere near as hot as expected; it's just I didn't say so as I was in and out yesterday; I just wanted to say that thanks to a mystery shop yesterday - I went into an Asda and was surprisingly impressed.

I'm probably a bit boring for you, I like a nice Chicken Dhanzak myself, or Thai curries. For me its more about the flavour than the heat. Having said that, restaurant Dhanzak can be pretty hot compared to supermarket jobbies.

You can have both - that's the real trick.

                              Boring? You? Naaah.
