Job dilemma

Currently at work we are going through a reorganisation. This means that a large number of roles are posted as available and we have to sift through and apply for ones that interest us.
Being remotely based there are not many that are even possibilities for me.
Once we have applied if we get offered a role we applied for we have to take it.
My issue is this. There is 1 job I would really like and 4 that I could possibly do but am worried I would not enjoy them for the next 4 years.
If I don't get a job this go then I get my first notice of redundancy next month and still have 7 months before I would actually leave.
If I am offered a role I would lose the redundancy option.

Should I
a) just go for the job I like and hope for the best
b)Apply for all of them to show willing and put up with 4 years in a role I'm not keen on if I get offered the wrong one.

Any thoughts will be gratefully received. Applications have to be submitted tomorrow.

Most importantly, would you cope if you were made redundant? How important is your wage? if you being made redundant means that you'd be in financial difficulties, thenyou have to apply for all of them really. If you could cope with redundancy, and would seriously hate the other jobs, then just apply for the one you'd like.

Cheers Sarz. Redundancy would actually mean a decent pay off which would allow me to reduce the mortgage thus relieving the financial pressure to have such a well paid job. I could then look for something locally which possibly pays less but may be more fulfilling.

Its a tricky one Incy, I've done jobs I've hated just to keep us solvent. I suppose, if you ended up with one of the '4' jobs you weren't that keen on, the old addage still applies, that it's easier to find a new job while you're currently in a job...did that make sense?

The point I think I'm making, is that, if you ended up in one of the '4', and really hated it, you could always start looking for a position elsewhere...you wouldn't necessarily be 'stuck' for ever and ever.

Just be careful about the redundancy option. If for any reason you could not go straight to another job and had to rely on benefits for a short time your redundancy payment would be taken into account when working out your entitlement. You would be expected to live off of your redundancy rather than using it to pay off some or all of your remaining mortgage.

Be careful. I was unable to work after a very serious accident. All of the benefits I had been given in that time had to be paid back when my compensation came through.

Thanks Snuffer I appreciate the input. I hadn't thought about that although I would only pay money off the mortgage once I had found another job.
The problem is that working from home, it can be really hard to motivate yourself so doing a job you don't enjoy makes it even harder. I have had a couple of positions like that so know what I would be letting myself in for

I'm not sure I understand the situation, Incy. You can apply for 5 of the jobs, yes? So what happens if you are offered more than one? Or is it the same people looking at ALL the applications, so you would only be offered one of the roles you applied for?

If the latter, then I would be careful to apply for the 2 best jobs (or 3 at a push). That way, you eliminate the ones you're really not sure about, but still give yourself a reasonable chance of receiving a job offer you can celebrate, rather than tolerate.

Very few people live to work, most of us work to live.

I'd go for the jobs that on offer, you may be surprised and actually enjoy the ones you thought you might hate.

As Becki said, it's not the end of the world, and if you don't like it at least you have a job whilst looking for another.

Thanks for the support guys. Have looked again at them I had narrowed it down to 2. I don't believe I have the right skills match for the others and there are already loads of applicants for those roles. I just relooked at the 2 I feel I could do even if one is second choice and discovered the second choice one is only for 4 months so doesn't really help. Mind you it might be a good way of trying it to see and getting my profile raised a bit in other quarters

If you are offered the 2nd chance job which ends in 4 months will you still be entitled to redundancy?

just be carefull incy,if you were to accept the 4 month option,that it might be classed as another job,that will wipe out any redundancy,gees it's a mine field,glad i no longer work,best of luck with it all.
