Mr Bagpuss To Be has suggested that we wait a little while before investing in W7 (tecchie geek) in order to see what the bugs in the system are.

We've got Vista and both had / have horrid problems with it. He's taken Vista off his machine and runs XP. I still have Vista and am hoping he might get rid of it for me.

I have XP on here, and also on my old 3rd-hand lappy (that's also got Mandriva on it too, which I haven't played with yet). I see no reason to change to Vista/Windows 7 or anything until they stop supporting XP.

Did consider Mac, BIL has one, but won't let me play with it so dunno!

Stay well clear of it until the first service pack comes out to fix the problems that the first adopters will find.
There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it in your future.

I agree Beefy. Microsoft always releases new software, particularly Operating systems too early before the bugs are out. They need the money you see.

64 bit is only useful if your drivers and apps support it. And... Win 7 32 bit recognises more than 3.5Gb RAM as it allocates any more to other uses.

Basically 32 bit operating systems can only use 4GB memory (theoretically), however something like XP could only use just over 3GB (you could use a startup switch in the boot ini file though to see a bit more) WIN 7 can see over 3.5GB but not over 4. A 64 bit O/S can see shed loads of RAM but if you are running apps that are designed for 32 bit on a 64 bit O/S you wont see much (if any) benefit.

              Hope this helps

easier GUI - easier graphical user interface ie the bit you 'interact' with, Windows itself.

BSOD or crash - Blue Screen of Death is often the colour the screen goes when it crashes!

Well supported OS - well supported Operating System, as I said above, its already got support for 8000ish apps & stuff.

I was quite upset when I changed my pc and had to move from xp to 64bit vista (lots of ram) but to be fair its been very good and caused no issues at all.

It came with a free win7 upgrade which has just been shipped I am reliably informed via email. I will sit on it for a bit till any feedback comes across but too be fair, microsoft just dare not sell another vista so I expect it to be pukka from the off.

Right click on 'my computer' choose properties - that should tell you.

Click on 'Start' then on 'Control Panel' then on 'System'. That will tell you.

But when I click on 'start' there is no 'control panel' option.

Both get you to exactly the same place in XP and in the lower right quadrant of the panel that appears you will see the processor type and speed, and how much RAM you have.

Thanks. Found it, at this unearthly time of the morning too. 2.00 GB. None the wiser really. Is that good?
