    Windows 7

Well Ive done it, and downloaded Windows 7, in the process Ive lost everything on my PC.
Pictures, music, pod-casts, the anti-virus software.

However it works quite fast.....possibly because there is nothing for it to do.

Yeah, but you can just reload your pictures, music, etc. from your backup can't you?

Laser printers aren't that much more expensive than inkjets these days and if you only wanted mono then a laser may work out cheaper.
I have seen too many printers thrown away because of using cheaper ink more so with HP printers, and your right Granny probably doesn't want a network (10/100baset) or perhaps even wireless.
I worked for a printer refill company for a while, the problem with using cheap inks and refilling is more to do with the sponges inside the cartidges getting clogged and then overheating, the sponges need to be cleaned out properly between each fill.

In general for running costs when my job ended Aug 2008 Lexmark printers were the most expensive followed by the newer HP inkjets, Epson and then Canon (These being the main 4 manufacturers of inkjets). Based on the things i saw with the different printers although Epson may just take the title for print quality i think Canon are the best all round printers however you must make sure you buy a model with seperate colour cartridges, machines that have just one black and one colour cartridge are the most expensive to run because you always end up throwing the colour when out just because one colour has been used up, you could still have half a tank of the other two but its no good without that one you ran out of first.

Laser printers are far more economical to run but more expensive to buy, and if you want to print photos then you need to do research because not all can print on photo paper. Refilling of Laser cartridges is probably more stable than refilling of inkjets and can cut running costs a fair bit more (very messy and i would not recommend doing it at home). For anybody who uses them or tries to refill, if you spill any toner powder do not try and wash it up with hot water, it sets the colour, and only use a hoover with a very fine grade filter or all you are doing is spreading the powder around the room via the hoovers exhaust.

Granny if you decide to go with a Canon printer Here is the URL for their Windows 7 supported printers.
