Where have all the Acorns gone..?

Dont know if any of you guys have noticed this recently but are there any Acorns in your area...?

I've noticed on another forum the same question asked and it really rang a bell with me as I've been trying to take part in this scheme by the national forest... nationalforest.org | People & Projects | Grow a tree from seed

You collect Acorns, grow them on for a couple of years, then plant them on a planting day with the National forest.

However I've been out twice in the last month to collect Acorns and found none.... I've been to about 10 seperate Trees some in groups of 4 or more, I've only found a couple of manky ones so far.

I was assuming the wildlife had been through and cached them for the winter, but I dont remember a time when I found none at all, not even bits.!

Is there a lack of Acorns in your area, or is it just me..?

The garden I was in on Thursday is dominated by an enormous Oak - you need hard hat and flak jacket when under the canopy NO shortage there, enough scope to cover the whole of the UK with trees I shouldn't wonder!





Now, there's a thought!

I have an oak wood and there are hundreds of thousands of them in the woods and garden - how many do you want?

Apparently oaks can go for years without producing many acorns. They only produce a bumper crop after a few years, then they go back to producing not a lot. I don't know if it's the case for ALL the oaks in a certain area (and therefore could be environmentally influenced), but I know that's definitely the case!

Me and him in the corner have not found any whilst walking about around here all i have found is a few Oak Apples there is a lack of them about here ....jacob

I'm wondering if its because we had an almost 100% dry September around here...

Loads on my plot, they fall off the tree and hit a metal shed a couple of plots away and I jump every bloomin time lol.

I was at Westonbirt Arboretum at the weekend and commenting on how tall one of the trees was and BAMMMMM an acorn flew from the sky and hit me on the cheek..OUCH

So if flying acorns count then there are some over in Gloucestershie

I went to Coleshill this morning there is a fair few oak trees on the way about 5 miles and not a single one on the road squashed usually this time of the year the roads are a real mess with squashed acorns.
It do's seem a bit of a mystery....jacob
