  • Suspicious Puddle.

Just been down to the utility room and found a small puddle of water in front of the freezer. Opened the door to find that all of the contents have thawed out. The freezer has died and taken all my lovely veg. with it.

I had stacks of frozen broad beans, peas, sweet-corn and rhubarb. All that effort growing, picking, podding and blanching gone to waste. I'm just a tad p'eed off.

Will get in touch with insurers later but don't hold out much hope. They'll probably want to see receipts for the purchase of the seeds. How do I place a value on all that organic produce and all that hard work?

Sorry to hear your bad news, Snuffer. Won't they take photographic evidence and an inventory of what was in each bag and how heavy it was? You may be able to get the value of bought equivalents? (Or am I in fantasy land here? )
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

That's awful Snuffer its bad enough your freezer should die on you, but to lose all your hard work in terrible, here's hoping the insurance company pays out for you.

Sorry to hear about your freezer. Could you not give the insurance company the price of replacing your goods, using supermarket prices? Unfortunately you will not be able to replace the fruit and veg with home grown produce so would have to visit a retailer to do so.
Hope you get sorted out soon.

ROLLOCKS!!!! unlucky snuffer, as others have said its worth a try with your insurance company, even if you'd filled the freezer with shop brought stuff its unlikely you'd keep the receipts so its worth a bash

I agree with Nicos - you have had a terrible blow all that beautiful home grown veg defrosted, but he's right, get cooking so that you can refreeze it, or have a big party so that you get the benefit of all your hard work. Hope it all works out for you.

Have a big cook-up for the neighbours. Early Hallowe'en party

Most freezers are well insulated and if the items are still frozen or partly frozen, usually they can be refrozen without any problems.

Certain high risk foods, such as meat and especially fish cannot however be easily refrozen but are still perfectly acceptable to be used straight away.

Choker indeed, but agree with the last couple of posts, get it cooked and refrozen. Will be a fair bit of work, but worth it in the long run I would have thought.

What she said. Other than that, I don't think insurance companies expect to see receipts for frozen food, but taking pics is a good idea (before you cook it all, lol!). It does sound like a good excuse for a party...

My first thoughts about the puddle before I read your post was one of your dogs has had an 'accident'! Sorry, I know it's not funny but I would think your insurance will pay out, don't they usually cover freezer contents up to £500? As long as you submit a reasonable claim & possibly supply photos I can't see them refusing. I'd do as the others have suggested & try & cook as much as possible.

Am I the only one who would just put some things back in the freezer then?

Some veg would be fine if you drain off excess water. Our freezer 'went' a few weeks ago, and veg things generally went straight back in. Some sliced peppers went wrong, and some things will lose a bit of quality but other things fine. A pea won't argue with being refrozen.
