Trouble with that is, it assumes people know how to identify weeds, or care for that matter. Its a tricky one

Its marvellous when even the council can tell you what & what not to put in your bin.

We have 3 daleks at home and one on the plot but I still fill my brown bin each fortnight. The woody stuff that I can't compost down within a year goes in there. A big compost heap will cook up much higher temperatures so they are welcome to my shrub prunings and thick stalks.

How else would you expect to tell you, it's the council's job to sort the waste and therefore up to them (within reason) how they do it

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Well, it would spread the evil weed if the municipal composting was unable to kill it off or require the green waste to go to landfill.

Besides, they say not to put bones into the kitchen waste stuff, and advise which plastics they can and can't recycle etc. so it is more advisory than orders.

Need to do some serious reading if expected to know what all plants are. I know what plastic is, or bones but haven't a clue what Japanese knot weed is.......I think parts of this vine are a bit to advanced for me & need to hold back on my veiws.

I wish our council DID sell back the compost! At the moment THEY PAY for it to go to York and be composted, and then THEY PAY AGAIN to get it back to Skipton to landscape what was a Tilcon quarry What a waste of my council tax!!!

...and, I think that's my point, the proverbial Joe Bloggs clearing his overgrown garden isn't really going to care what he is chopping down and shoving in a bin bag. He just knows his garden is overgrown and needs dealing with. Our council doesn't stipulate no G.Hogweed or Jap.Knotweed. It doesn't display photos of them next to the crusher either - perhaps they should.

BM, don't be afraid to voice opinions on here (sometimes I have to bite my tongue), if the mods don't like something you've said, they'll soon let you know, and reasoned debate is important to increase everyones' understanding of a subject, not just the people replying to the thread, but those reading it as 'guests', or doing a 'search' in the future.

                      Our council goes one better.

They make a charge for the collection and then try and sell it back!!!

I think you'd know if you had it. You'd be hard put to find your house underneath it when you return from work of an evening

same as others.. wouldn't buy the compost as the blightly bits and things like bind weed end up in mine. I never had to buy as was here when I moved in...

Our council collects garden waste fortnightly using long handled sacks. I've been up to the processing plant (lured by free compost) and the operation is really super-organised. The compost is shredded, mixed and heated to destroy any pests and diseases - including Japanese knotweed - then laid out in long lines to cook for a while and then bagged. The finished product is sold on as soil conditioner.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

We don't have a green waste collection, but Mum does down the road in Suffolk.

My shrubby woody prunings go in a 'wildlife' corner of the lotty
Grass clippings: none. The guinea pigs mow the lawn for me
Pernicious weeds: get rotted in a bucket of water, then added to compost heap
Leaves: rotted down in black binliners to make leafmould

Perhaps if I was Queen, I'd give everybody a lotty and a guinea pig instead of 4 different coloured bins. Or a goat: that would eat textiles as well as kitchen scraps.

Ours charge £30 a year for the 'green waste' bin (emptied every 2 weeks).
We might have enough to fill one twice a year, so we go without.
