The first rule of dishwasher club is: you do not talk about dishwasher club
The second rule of dishwasher club is: you do not talk...oh no, it's: no smoking

...So as a new dishwasher owner (*smug grin*) does anyone have any advice?
I've heard it's not a great idea to put glasses in as the detergent salt will slowly make them go cloudy.
What else do I need to know?

If you have one like mine that opens downwards with a worksurface above, they are great for winemaking - honest

When racking or bottling; stand the bottles/empty dj on the open lid and that way any spillage that doesn't go in your mouth will go into the dishwasher when the lid is closed.

Thanks to Shirlthegirl for that tip.

ps, congratulations on your noo dishwasher - great aren't they?

I've had a dishwasher for the past 13 years and haven't had any problems with cloudy glasses.
Don't put in anything wooden or if you have them bone handled knives. In fact any sharp knives shouldn't go in as it blunts them.
Silver is also a no no but I don't know anyone who uses it on a regular basis so unlikely to be a problem for most.
Otherwise most things can go in although we tend to wash pans by hand more because of the space they take than any other reason.

Buy Finish dishwasher tablets - they're the mutts.

Make sure you clean the dishwasher regularly, top up the salt and rinse aid regularly and you'll have many years happy motoring...sorry, washing in it.

You can also use it to poach a whole salmon apparently.

Yup, I'm with you Wayne on that one. If you buy the most expensive ones, they even have some sort of glass protector thingy in them and it really does work.

Ooh like the salmon idea Wayne!
Ours is 13 years old and works like new. Finish tabs are great but the tesco's own brand ones work just as well and cost a lot less

I find that the cheap own-brand tablets work best in ours!

They are also good for sterilising jars for jam making - highest setting possible and no detergents etc....

I like it, I'll use that idea for more than just wine making.
To be honest, I think I'll do all my prep work on it, it'll save on wiping surfaces clean!

All useful tips. My step mum puts her silver in the dishwasher, but she says to make sure you do it on a separate load to any stainless steel because it's the two metals that react.

They told me yesterday, but I've obviously only just got the ribbon.

A dishwasher AND M.O.M, what else could I want?

Grats on the MOM and on the new dishwasher.

I don't put salt or rinse aid in our washer - I buy tablets with those included. Haven't had glasses go cloudy for ages now. My tip would be to take care when putting glasses and stuff in as Madmax has a tendency to cram loads in and I usually find a broken glass when I unload it

Oh, and make sure whatever you do put in, allows the rotating washy arm thing to rotate and washy.

Mine beeps at me and tells me when the arm can't do its rotatey thing but the French for it is aspersion and it took me ages to realise what the problem was the first time it happened
