  • Is the Grapevine "Search" facility flawed?

Just tried to search for my "Too Much Vinegar in my Onion Marmalade" thread, so plugged in "too much vinegar" into the search.

The thread appeared, but about halfway down the second page.

I expected it at the top of the list given that I'd used the exact same words, in the exact same order.

Granted I'm not the most tech savvy of people, but still.

I agree...often there'll be pages of stuff & what I'm looking for will be eother way down the page or indeed on the next.
If you're looking for a thread that either you started or you know who did,I find the easiest way is to go to that persons profile & search all threads they've started.

It lists the results in order of the most recent post. I believe.

It is flawed in that you ought to be able to rule out searching certain boards E.g. "rule the roost". No offence to you chicken lovers, but as a non-chicken keeper there is never anything on the board I want to read through.
So when I see threads such as "unforseen problem", "Trivial question" and "Drinkers", I go into them before I realise they're chicken related.
Like I say, I'm sure they're of interest to chicken lovers, just not for me.

Trouble is (and this is somewhat related to my apology thread t'other day), when you talk as much shizzle as I do, it's still difficult to find what yer after.

It worked for me when I typed in 'Gingery Ginger Cake' for brengirl, but it did only pull up two results.

I have trouble using it. I typed Gin in search the other day and absolutely nothing came up, even when I could see threads on the first page of Juicy Gossip with Gin in the title??? Why would this be???

Bex, it doesn't search for words of less than 4 letters, so 'Gin' wouldn't qualify.

If you go onto the Advanced Search (link is just below the text box when you click 'Search'), you can change some of the options to narrow down your search, like searching by user-name, only certain boards, or only posts from a certain date. You can also tell it to only search thread title rather than whole threads etc.

Ahh, thanks Sarz, that makes sense. I'm sorted now, was looking for something exciting to do with Gin.

                      Hi Bex,

                      Recipe for raspberry gin:

                      Ingredients:
                      •300g of raspberries
                      •330g of white granulated sugar
•1.5 litres (or more) of medium quality gin
•Steriiised 2 litre Le Parfait jar or 2 or 3 (70 cl) washed and sterilised gin bottles
                      Method:

1.Wash raspberries and discard any bruised fruit. Place rasberries in either a large 2 litre Kilner/Le Parfait jar or divide the raspberries between 2 or 3 (70 cl) saved gin bottles.
2.Using a funnel, add the sugar (divide the amounts if using several bottles) and top up with gin to the rim.
3.Shake every day until the sugar is dissolved and then store in a cool, dark place until you can resist it no longer (leave for at least three months, we usually let it mature for a year).
4.If you are making blackberry gin remove the fruit after 3 months (pour through muslin) to stop the woody taste developing and mature for at least a year.

Sounds yummy and I don't drink

If you want to search for all those words together (too much vinegar) then you need to put plusses between the words: too + much + vinegar

then your thread shows up about number 4 on page one
