I have had three requests this morning to be friends and wasn't sure whether to reply or not. But, apparently there must be folk out there hard up for friends! So, I will reply.

Look at "friends in common" and it's usually fairly obvious if they're a Grape or not.

It's pretty easy for me as my grapvine name is my real name, but generally when someone requests me, it's handy if they put "It's X off the grapevine" in the comments box.
That way I know if I want to ignore you!

For anyone who fancies a bit of 'joining in' may I recommend My Zoo. It has been designed to be unlike most facebook games. Nothing goes wrong if you can only go there for 5 mins a day (or indeed if you go on holiday for 2 or 3 weeks), you don't need friends or neighbours in order to progress, (just a bit of business sense really) but you can see how your friends are doing if you want.
There are some chooks in the 'petting zoo' which is the first bit you get.....

Currently too dedicated to Farmville, but I will get bored with it sooner or later (like I did with Mafia Wars) and move on, so My Zoo might be next in line.
