I would like to know what happened to common courtesy and manners, so many people are not brought up with them and it seems that us grapes with them are a dying breed

my father was in the RAF and i was brought up to keep my elbows in at the table, sit up straight, never rest my elbows on the table, eat with my mouth closed, never reach over the table for condiments always ask for them to be passed. when walking to keep head up, feet pointed straight forward stomach in shoulders straight lol. never to swear, never talk over others always say please n thank you etc. needless to say i've broken most of these over the years but still try to respect the values of others.

I was always told not to rest my elbows on the table, not to put my knife in my mouth, ask to leave the table, eat with my mouth closed and not to speak with my mouth full, and a definite no no when my Grand-Dad was alive...no reading the paper at the table when you were eating.
We (my sister and me) were always told not to interrupt when my parents were talking, don't back chat, always hold the door open, don't touch something that doesn't belong to you and one that I think is a must...Respect your elders.
Manners cost nothing.

I heard once, that the Queen's butler is famous for pouring wine through the fingers of dinner guests after they put their hand over their glass when he went to pour them more wine.
I believe it stems from the fact that a guest should always have had sufficient to eat and drink, so if they finish their wine or food more is always provided for them until they fail to finish it.
