The bloke isn't being given the house you know - it's going to belong to a Housing Association, and will continue to do so long after he pops his clogs. They are building another house suitable for wheelchairs at the same time, but no-one's kicking off about that one?! Is that because the Mail can't fix a 'label' to the person who'll be living in that one?! And it says that the house is being [...]financed by a grant from the Homes and Communities Agency[...] not the NHS, i.e. money set aside for building houses...

It also mentions [...]as well as health problems including kidney failure and diabetes[...] so it's not as black and white as they make it out to be.

I've looked after more than one seriously overweight patient when I worked in a nursing home. Yes, they did eat a bit more than the 'average', but for the most part the fact is that being ill and bed-bound had got them overweight to begin with and they didn't have the strength necessary to get the weight back off again. One lady was constantly trying to shift the weight, and it made her exceedingly miserable being in that state
The Daily Mail has to be the worst paper I have ever read. During the summer they have sensational headlines like heatwave on the way thousands will die and during winter at least a dozen times you will read headlines like siberian winds, colder than moscow, elderly will freeze to death. They also run a health related sensational story on a daily bascis. I only know this as a work mate buys it everyday, and dont get me going on there immigration propaganda and hatred.

Hubby used to read the Mail. He'd buy it with a loaf of bread on a Saturday morning, bring both home, we'd settle down to a nice, leisurely breakfast and you could guarantee that by page 5 at the latest he'd be in a full-blown Meldrew.

Now we buy The Guardian and he sticks to the magazine. Sweet peace is restored!

I was on steriods too, I was the little fat kid who always got picked last for teams in PE. It's easy to blame childhood problems for adult issues, but in the end there are two choices - wallow in it and say 'oh poor me' or decide to do something about it. Pass my running shoes

I have struggled with my weight on and off for the whole of my life (sometimes due to medication and sometimes due to having no willpower)and shall continue to do so probably til they compost me.

The cheapest solution I can recommend it to gaffa tape the mouth up and not buy biscuits.

Also getting off your bum and digging helps!

Surely a gastric band or bypass would also cost less and be guaranteed to get results.

Well said - that paper winds me up something rotten with it's pious branding of people into holes without any concern for basic accuracy if that gets in the way of what they consider to be a good story. As I see it this is a sad story about somebody who has some major difficulties with life, yes he needs to help himself but as none of us know him or his full circumstances it is very difficult to be totally objective.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

it is a sad story but it wasn't only in the Mail, several others covered it also, I only know this because I was having to do a sweep of most of the papers for a client at the time.

I have no doubt he would prefer to be fit and healthy, as we all do but I'm still not convinced moving him into a bigger house will help him long term, unless they are offering other help alongside that - such as diet/training/depression (possibly) issues.

I take Sarah's point that this isn't 'his' house - my view wasn't about him being 'given' a house, it was that I couldn't see how it would help him improve his lot.

I think you're right there, it needs to be a 'multi-pronged' approach. But it sounds like that's what he's needed for quite some time! His wife was saying that she hopes when they move, that he'll be able to get into the garden... Maybe we should send them a copy of GYO

the house was built because his sheltered accom was due to be demolished. Norwich City Council say they have an "obligation" to provide the bungalow under equality laws.

Since when was being over-weight an equality issue? (I can say this without coming over non-pc, as I was told that I was medically obese last week )
