Old maps

Anyone into old maps?
I have just acquired some old very large scale maps of Nottingham. (meadows area)
By very large scale I mean 41" to the mile or 500 to 1.
The maps are dated 1881 & the man who sold them to me has loads more.

What a great forum to share BW - not my area but such a wonderful resource!
I have some very old maps of Normandy when my father was over there before D - day! After that he was put into some Stalags.

They are very detailed outside loos & even lamp posts are on the maps.
The area covered on each map is about three quarters of a square mile & one details 22 pubs.

I love old maps and documents Dad has the original deeds and maps relating to his house from back in the 1700s and they're fascinating, although indecipherable in places.

I was fascinated when we got the deeds to our house, they came with a small map of the surrounding area which looks nothing like it dose now, well it was back in 1862.

I love this sort of thing..I do an awful lot of genealogy research- and it'd be lovely to see old maps of the areas I've researched!

Similarly, I have a printing plate from 1730 something of a map showing coaching inns where a coach and horses could stay the night.

I found it on a bench outside an old bookshop that was closing down that day. The owner had just put all his stock outside in the rain. I also picked up a book about the life of Mozart, published in late 1700's.

The plate is quite interesting, even if you know nothing about it (like me).

We got given a Satnav. It does get used a bit, but mapreading is no problem, the 'dread machine' is just laziness (and out of date, so of limited use).
PS any other areas of maps?????

I've got a box of old maps, all areas of Britain and small islands etc. Earliest is 1915. been trying to sell them (for a very small price) maybe I'm advertising in the wrong place. I've no use for them. Any suggestions?

Mainly but there are some of out lying villages.
Example Bulwell & Eastwood.
In 1880 Nottingham was still a town & did not receive city status till 1897.
But the maps are all of the Nottingham area.
The man I am getting them off bought them at an auction.
He has about 150 of them.
Each map covers about three quarters of a square mile & I have found it quite interesting to compare with modern street maps which can be difficult as most of the area has been redeveloped.

I am interested in maps of Nottingham & surrounding area.
There are some dealers who specialise in map.
Try Googling map dealers the are quite a few.
