Hip replacement

Have any of you younger grapes had a hip replacement? By younger I mean younger than Seahorse obviously.

Please, I dont want third hand accounts but actual info if anybody has thanks.

my next door neighbour had one 4 weeks ago he is 47 he's up and about now not using his sticks anymore just waiting for his six weeks to be up ps he decorated his sitting room last week dont suppose the doc's would have advised that but he feels really well. Why do you need one?

Not got any news of youngsters having them but got several elderly rellies who've had them if you want info, just pm me. They had varying degrees of success.
I believe the key is to do the excercises afterwards or you are a bit stuffed mobility wise.

The main problem with replacement joints in 'young' people is that they only last for so long and then have to be redone. In an elderly person this obviously isn't such a huge issue, and at the most 1 additional op is all that is likely. In a younger person though, this might entail 3/4/5 additional op's, dependant on age. That has to be taken into consideration by the consultant/surgeon/anaethetist as well as the patient.

I haven't personally had a replacement, so I can't tell you any more than that really, except that the person I know who did is happy, functional and pain-free at the moment.

i hear theres a new type of replacement (same op, ball made of different stuff) which is supposed to last MUCH longer, hence reducing need for as many ops for younger peeps. It was Dad, who had one and recovered well, who told me that. I'll ask if he has more info but dont hold out hope, it was a couple of months back now. If he does has any solid infi I'll pm it to you.

PW - my sis is having hers done in a week or so - it is a brand new type made of ceramic not metal. Let's hope it all works!

I know someone who had both his done in his 70's and wished he'd had it done years earlier. He used to ride point-to-point and play racquetball (like Squash) right into his 60's. And a few months after the op he was fighting fit and raring to go!

I also had a friend who had to have it done when she was young - and it cost her family a fortune

Younger people should be investigated for hip joint resurfacing before they go for the replacement option - my sis was not suitable as she had worn the joint down so she is walking bone on bone

No first hand experience and not likely to have either. I'm 50, both my hips have pretty much disintegrated (at least that's how it feels) in the space of 2 months and I'm not just having difficulty walking, but can't really walk at all any longer. I'd set a lot of store by an appointment at the Rheumatology assessment centre last week, but it seems that because the type of arthritis I have is psoriatic I will never be offered a hip replacement (or any other form of elective surgery). My aunt is 85, had hers replaced in the summer and has been given a new lease of life, so I'd say they were definitely worth considering. Good Luck to whoever is thinking of this.
