  • Check your utility accounts

Today I sigbed up for the British Gas "energy smart" account where you supply meter readings monthly and only pay for what you use.

Whilst online I noticed we had built up a big credit and so called in. The upshot is that after supplying a meter reading the account was brought up to date and we have been credited with £310.95. A tidy sum for Christmas.

With this in mind, it may be worth whilst you peeps checking your gas and electricity accounts and geting back some dosh for Christmas.

Right, time to log onto the Eon site!

I'm just about to look at our lecky usage again (after changing to a cheaper supplier last year).
The cheaper supplier has just doubled my direct debit.

After Eon charged us £260 for 15 days usage, I started checking our bills properly for the first time. We use loads as I'm at home all day with 2 babies, and I like us to be nice and warm!

We have did credit of about £400 from over-paying through the summer months, but I suspect we're (literally) burning our way through that!

I have a current loathing of BT for a number of reasons, not least that after months of messing our lines and connections up, they're currently charging us for three times more than we ever use! The only way to change it is to 'discuss it' with them, and I can't bring myself to do it quite yet...I hate being rude to anyone on the 'phone, and I don't trust myself not to be with them!

It's worth keeping an eye on it as it can be a right pain to get back in a lump sum and note that people claiming that it will be cheaper with them are usually on commission so check your facts.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

While I was unemployed I used to get at least one person a week trying to convince me to change supplier because they were cheaper. (probably still do, but I'm never there). I always used to laugh in their faces and say "Funny, because British Gas/Eon/npower said exactly the same thing last week, only one of you can be right".

Erm, I am not talking about changing supplier, I am talking about checking your acount because if you pay by DD you may well have built up quite a credit, we certainly had.

Sorry, I know, I was going off on a tangent because of what Alison said.
                  Appologies for the derail.

we are nearly always owed money from DD's mounting up. Easy enough for them to take the money - we have to jump through hoops to get it back.....
E-on are the worst offenders by a mile.

Or even not been keeping tabs on your useage and actually owe them money...always surprised by the number of folk who don't seem to realise there's a difference between their utility DD amount and what they've actually used!

I check mine regulary and recently had £70ish back for gas, electric is in OH name and we could have some money back but he wont make the call but by the end of the winter we might have used it up. The phone bill went down from £40ish a month to £20 ish pound for 2 months but this week I have had a letter to say we owe them £60 ish pound and they are going to put it up to £47, oh no they are not, had they left it be we would not be owing them money now. I will work it out and compromise between the £20and £47.

I've heard enough stories about DD being ridiculous amounts. We'll just carry on objecting to being charged for the privilege of paying what we actually OWE (OH won't switch suppliers either, he likes to keep things as they are!)
