Just discovered this:

In the UK; 20p and 50p peices are 7 sided curvilinear polygons of constant width. That means that, even though they're not circular, when you put one into a vending machine, the machine can measure its width regardless of how the coin is oriented.

I knew this because Peter Rabbit (or Benjamin Bunny?) ate too much lettuce in Mr McGregor's vegetable garden, fell asleep because of the soporific effect of the lettuce and was nearly caught Which was when I learnt what soporific meant!
