        • There are a few 'facts' in there that I dispute.
The term "son of a gun" refers to the fact that ocasionally ladies of negotiable affection stayed on board Navy ships which sailed away, with inevitable results. The only way to provide a bit of privacy for the birth of a baby was to hang a sail curtain between the guns.

A square meal derives from the navy too. In days of yore the chefs aboard used to make a pastry plate, square in shape, called a Trenchard. The food used to all be placed inside and the whole lot was eaten.

I know I've found this thread rather late, but I have to say a humungous OUCH to the above - that has got to be the most interesting useless piece of information I have ever read!

Honestly - did she run out of names or what? How did she remember Birthdays?

                      • If you put money into the little windows on the advent calendar starting with 1p on the first day and doubling it everyday until the 25th of December, on day ten there would be £5.12 behind the window, on day fifteen there would be £163. 84 and on Christmas day there would be £167772.16.

That's my kind of advent calendar.

                            • A left-handed individual is colloquially referred to as a "leftie." In more technical contexts, 'sinistral' may be used in place of 'left-handed' and 'sinistrality' in place of 'left-handedness.' Both of these technical terms derive from sinister, a Latin word meaning 'left'.

I'm handed by the way. Left handed People also live on average 5 years less that right handed people

                              • The English word "battologize" means to repeat a word or phrase to an excessive degree. Battologize is derived from the ancient Greek word "battologia", which means "stammering(repeated or stuttering) speech". Battologize most likely shares a root with the English word "batter" (battering-ram, battery[assault]), which means "To hit heavily and repeatedly with violent blows."
