Fanny Cradock - the Christmas series was done in 1975 - I think after Johnny had died. She looks crazy the show, bow in hair, eyebrows pencilled in 2" above where they should be - and such a hectoring style of presenting!
Id forgotten Jonny wasnt in it. She was a right cow wasnt she? She ruled that kitchen with an iron rod. I once saw a programme which included the people who helped her, and yes, she was a right lady! Her downfall came a few years ago I think, she was invited to judge a tv programme where a normal person won it, then made some dishes to be judged by Fanny. She was just so critical and the poor woman being judged was nearly in tears. I dont think Fanny was ever seen on TV again.
On a more positive note - good old Margarette Patten is still with us, and is a super as ever.

Wow Bernie - memory lane or what? That would have been the series that Esther Rantzen did - can't remember what it was called- but Fanny was seen to be doing a 'puke' reflex on camera as a reaction to this lady's hot favourite recipe - I think it was chocolate bread and butter pudding - this was far too common for Fanny - sadly she missed the mood of the times and never worked as a TV chef again. I'm not sure of the dates but I'm sure I had already watched Delia on Look East - doing simple recipes in a very short recipe slot - soda bread and the Grant loaf spring to mind- this was when I lived in 'stAnglia eons ago!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Oh heck DDL, you've taken me back. The cookery competition that Fanny poohpoohed was organised by Women's Realm magazine. The had regional competitions, and the one that she was so rude about was the national final. Exit Fanny.

My earliest memory of a TV cook was Philip Harben.

I've just done a bit of a scan of the bookshelves. TV cook/chef related authors include Robert Carrier, Anton Mossiman, the Roux brothers, Gary Rhodes, Katie Stewart, Mary Berry, Keith Floyd, and international cooks/chefs Ken Hom, Kenneth Lo, Madhur Jaffrey, Valentina Harris, Antonio Carluccio. And that's to name just a few.

My all time favourite was/is Robert Carrier.

I think/know I'm definitely giving my age away with this post, but I can't stand the 'bleepin' Jamie Oliver and the 'bleepin' Gordon Ramsey

P.S. DDL, not only was Fanny Cradock an old cow, but she was a stuck up old cow.

She was also ugly and cross-eyed!

And I think she shared the same dressmaker and beautician with Barbara Cartland.

I shall now sheathe my claws and get back to the original posting.

I have actually bought the new Delia book, and am enjoying it (especially as it only cost a fiver.) Have already done the wild mushroom soup, and have bought a panetonne to do her bread and butter pudding variation.

I think I shall have to watch the programme again next Sunday so as to remind me of the bits I may have missed.

Ah Fanny Craddock. One of my most treasured TV memories.
She was making doughnuts, and at the end of the process, presented them to the audience for muchos applause. Johnny takes the stage and says

"I hope you all paid attention ladies and gentlemen. If you have, then you'll all be able to make doughnuts like Fanny's."

I wish I'd seen that one!
