I don't see Christmas as a christian festival, I view it along the lines of a traditional pagan festivity - the original religion in Britain and therefore as obtainable a celebration as guy fawkes night! free for all - when in rome.....

Mine will go up in a couple of weeks. Get it cheap as people grow them round here and sell for £7-10. Even though I live alone, it's worth it as it adds some cheer to a gloomy winter and there's nothing like 'hunt the bauble', when the kitty has had a play (I found last year's in July).
Besides, I need something to sit next to and drink Sloe Gin, Elderflower Champagne, Elderberry Wine...hmmm, I think I doth brew too much!!!

Or first tree went up tonight - 7ft Nordmann that I cut on Thursday. Iona hung all the baubles and Niamh was taking them off as quick as Iona was putting them on. We buy the girls a special bauble each, each year - this year they each got a uniquely patterned hand blown glass bauble from local company called Glasstorm, who we are friends with. Last year they were given little wooden dancing elves. The fairy that goes on the top is from Bermuds and was a present to us from my mum to mark Iona's very first Christmas.
Iona put up a small artificial tree in her room as well tonight.
Next week there is another 7ft tree going in the dining room and a 4ft tree in the hallway.Rat

We put the placky tree up y'day: the theme is blue & silver (Himself's a Chelsea fan). I'm not at all into the consumerism but I like some pretty lights in the middle of winter, and I've stapled a wreath to the back gate (I don't know who'll have it off there, the wind or the local yoofs).
We've strung blue lights in the windowsill round all the pumpkins: bit of a mixed message there. I might hang a vampire next to the fluffy Santa too.Last edited by Two_Sheds; 07-12-2009, 09:28 AM.All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

We're getting ours next weekend. I try to buy a 'nice' bauble each year from different places when we visit. Slightly concerned about 22 month old pulling it over, so will be bolting it into one of those decorative cast iron 'feet' things, and possibly lashing it to the wall as well.
Better get one of those non-droppy needle ones too come to think of it...
A few have gone up in our road, and some nice outside lights. We live next door-but-two to a church, with the big stained glass window facing our garden. It'll be nice to see it all lit up and hearing carols being sung etc. Lovely!I don't roll on Shabbos

Our tree( artificial) went up with great fanfare on Saturday just gone with loads of decorations that DD's been making in the weeks preceding along with the 300 fairy lights put up in her bedroomLast edited by RedThorn; 07-12-2009, 09:41 AM.Never test the depth of the water with both feet
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory....
Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

Ours went up on Saturday. Daughter arrived with granddaughter who pleaded to put it up now, so I did. I also have a tree in the porch and one in the conservatory. I have garlands on the two mantles in the sitting room and dining room with lights on and garlands and lights twined around the stairs rail.If I say so myself, i am quite pleased with the result.
And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
