  • Do you think it's possible...

to shake the hand of every new person you meet - every one?

A simple gesture, but how many of us do it?

It struck me whilst watching a film t'other day (The Game with Michal Douglas & Sean Penn if anyone's interested).

I don't shake hands if I can help it - horrid psoriasis means that it hurts me, and peeps don't like the feel of it! But the OH does hand-shaking a lot (it's habit from being a sales-person I think), and so does my Dad, from church-going and being a sales-person.

'Orrible if you shake hands with a clammy-hander though innit?!

Errm, I am one of life's clammy handers I'm afraid.

      But they're warm at least.

You know what they say - warm hands, high blood pressure.

Clammy hands has an upside - I never need hand cream. Can't bare the stuff, makes my hands all slippery.

I think shaking hands is a sign of friendly intention. The same as a wave. It demonstrates that you have no weapon concealed. I like to shake hands. It's a bonding. I cannot remember whether it is etiquette for a man to proffer to a lady. I think the lady offers her hand first.

A few months ago I was at a company's office, waiting for the person I was meeting. I had driven about 200 miles, so while I was waiting I nipped into the toilet. I washed my hands, but there was no paper towels left, so my hands were wet. As I left, they were waiting for me, and we went for the immediate handshake. Obviously, my hands were wet, and I saw them react.

Without thinking, I said: "It's okay, I didn't urinate on my hand, honestly."

                          The mood never really recovered.

Shaking hands is just the done thing over here.
I shake hands with any Frenchie that I know, whenever I see them (but only the first time every day, bad form otherwise).

Prefer that though, to close friends (male) kissing me. Most uncomfortable.
