Having worked as waitress myself I know what hard work it is but a job is a job, if the service is rotten there is no tip! i tip the hairdresser in their 'drinks' jar if my hair looks reasonable....I wouldn't tip delivery man unless it was big xmas shop. I f a bin man came to my door asking for a tip I would probably put the bin on his/her head!

Some excellent points of view in this thread, thank you

My point was how do we differentiate between who we tip, all of those mentioned above are in the low pay category

Its a good point, perhaps we only tip when we feel guilty or sorry for someone?

I don't tip the grocery delivery driver.
I rarely go to restaurants, get my hair cut, use a taxi, have a milkman, see the postman, etc. I don't tip them on the odd occasions that our paths cross because they are getting paid to do what they do. I don't consider it mean not to tip, sorry if others do.
If as previously stated, someone went above and beyond the call of duty and gave outstanding service then I probably would tip, but that never happens.

Somewhere, sometime back, I was told you don't tip the self employed. I wonder why? 9 times out of 10 they work harder longer hours than those they employ.

I have never tipped the supermarket delivery drivers, but should we? We tip hairdressers, taxi drivers etc - so why not the supermarket driver? And then, why not DHL, Postie, A.N.Other courier/carrier/delivery driver?

Maybe you already do tip the supermarket driver and maybe I'm just a meanie
As someone who works for a large supermarket company that delivers accepting a tip is frowned upon and I think can lead to disaplinary action and maybe loosing your job, but dont quote me on it.
Driver would certainly get into trouble and should know that it is NOT allowed. Same as all the other staff who work in supermarkets we are not allowed to accept gifts of any kind.

It's funny there are certain lines of work where we tip and others we don't. You might tip the milkman but you certainly wouldn't tip the rozzers for pulling you over while on your mobile phone!!?!?!

I am not a tipping type of person as if you recieve tips you have to declare them on your tax return!!!!!!!

So Mr Brown "I was only the chancellor, how did I know how bad we were in debt?" takes a cut of the tip I'd give aswell!

I am self-employed but not really in the line of work where you'd get a tip :-(
