Reminds me greatly of the Friends episode where Pheobe goes round rescuing all the spindly unloved trees before Joey can get them in the chipper!

Loads of houses here have Xmas trees fastened to the outside of their house/gate/wall . It seemed a bit strange to see ribbon bows on them and tinsel- but actually , it's lovely

Many trees are netted up before you buy them. You don't ever get to choose.

My trees bug ugly and that's the way I like them. I remember from childhood a story about a fir tree who was left all alone cos it wasn't as big or well shaped as the others and so no one picked it.

The tree was very sad cos all it had ever wanted, ever, was to be an Xmas tree and eventually it's the last tree left but no one wants it, not even on xmas eve. Finally, at the last minute, a small boy & his dad, who are very poor, take it home and cover it in homemade decorations where it becomes beautiful .

This story has always stuck with me and so I make a point of picking the ugliest tree. Also it's turned into a joke in the family so people always comment on the ugliness which I treat as a real compliment.

What is it about Christmas that gets emotions into overdrive.? Having utterly failed to pin my lads down to a time to do the tree I started decorating it without them. Next thing I knew I was in floods of tears with MrH looking totally bewildered When he asked me what was wrong all I could manage was "I want them to be 6 again"

I need to point out that I have always been surprised by empty nest syndrome, I have reveled in my children growing up and the increased freedom it gives me. To be honest I have always thought that women getting mawkish and sentimental about their children growing up was a bit silly. Never the less there I was sniveling

My mum loves having us all home for Christmas, by the time we're about to go home she's had enough of cooking and cleaning the house. But after we leave I always here that she had a blub about how empty the house was again.
I'd be disappointed if she didn't!

That is a lovely story Lizzie, and my ugly tree will get to be a christmas tree at the front of our house. We have just got back from buying a new tree for inside and I am happy to say it is perfect for us.

Once upon a time in the year 2009 everyone was dreaming once again of a White Christmas. The forecast looked promising and that is where my story begins. The most favourite tree to bedeck was the Norwegian Pine. They had been so over cut in previous years that stocks were now running low and even the lowliest samples were being dispatched to front rooms. One such little tree was heartbroken to learn that he was not just the right shape, neither tall enough to warrant the honour of holding on high the fairy princess.
On hearing that he was to be dispatched outside to the garden he hung his head in shame.
The north wind did blow and then from out of the midnight sky floated down little snow flakes. They fell faster and faster and he reached up his little arms to catch them. At last he grew weary. The burden almost too much for him to bear.
Carol singers trouped by. A lusty voice called out "STOP! Let's gather here under the most beautifull tree I have ever seen"
The little tree stood tall and proud and stiffled a tear.

                                Don't worry Brengirl,
I think it will look lovely just outside our front door with lights on it. It simply doesn't lend itself to decorations like baubles as the branches are too vertical for them to dangle. It won't be neglected just employed differently and as it will be at the front it will have pride of place making our house look christmassy
I love your story by the way although at 9ft tall I don't think it can really be described as little
