    Tricky One Jackie,

1 - Mainly agree with people's views on the school rules but also understand the security issues.

2 - For the people that have said they got home in their days so did I, but that exactly what it was, our days. Anyone wants to take a walk down Tottenham High Road or Wood Green with me let me know and we can see if it's like our days.

3 - Has anyone spoken to the school to understand the rules? Let's hope they are as efficient with bullies etc.

Good luck whatever the outcome Jackie
    Cheers

    Danny

Sorry....I still don't understand how a mobile phone can offer a kid security?Yep,they can use it to call home if they're going to be home later than normal and let you know they're safe but it's not going to prevent them getting mugged or kidnapped or such.

I think the child's mobile phone is offering the child's parent a sense of security, possibly false.

So many kids are capable of turning off their phones when they don't want their parent to contact them.

Nope, but they can let you know they've been mugged/kidnapped/such much sooner!

because of course the mugger's going to let them keep their phone!

You'd have to be a complete 'mug' to give your child a phone that's worth stealing. The market's saturated with models these days. If they HAVE to have a phone, surely you're not going to give them an iPhone, get them the kind of wind-up brick my gran still can't use...

I run the risk of being shouted at but here goes........I think phones are sometimes ( not always) used as an excuse because the parent (not all parents) cannot get off their bums to collect their kids. If I was really worried about my child not getting home safely, then it is MY responsibility to make sure they do. Phones with children should only be for emergencies in my view & not so that the parent can tell them to pick up some milk or bread on their way home...........Rant over, sorry.

It's tricky, your lucky in some ways as you have young? children. When it gets to the stage when you have to let them venture out on their own it's scary, I suppose I'll never stop worrying
                  Cheers

I guess you should worry when you stop worrying.

In 10 years time who knows what technology will be available - mobile phones will be so old hat.

You're right, they are still young....so yet to face the worries of letting them brave the world on their own. Also Ipswich isn't a majorly scarey place to live...give or take the odd serial killer!,
My issue isn't with kids having phones,I'm sure once mine are of the age they'll probably get one and it will posibly prevent hours of me worrying they're in the bottom of a ditch somewhere, when actually they've just gone to a mates house or something.BUT,I still don't think they actually offer any additional security.

In my kids school, the phone is confiscated for a month if it is seen or heard during school time (kids are expected to keep them switched off in their lockers). I think this is standard practice in all schools in Dublin and I'm sure it's much the same in the U.K. Many schools also impose a €20 fine before the phone is returned. Kids know they shouldn't use them in school. As for security, the school secretary will allow them phone home to say they have no phone and many parents give them another phone to use while theirs is confiscated.(A boy in my daughters class managed to get his own phone confiscated one day, his mother's the following day and his grandmother's later in the week!!). Some people just can't be told!!

Exactly. If the parent is really convinced that said child won't get home safely without a mobile phone then go pick them up, get a friend to pick them up, send a taxi to pick them up (take cost out of pocket money!)...

You would have a long walk home? I always carry a phone with me out on a horse though for the same reason.

I agree. Phones don't make them any safer but they make ME feel better. Youngest son is habitually late, at least I can ring him and find out where he is, what time he is planning on showing up etc

Surely not? IMO that is the only reason to give a kid a phone, jolly handy it is too
