  • Olympia london horse show

Got back recently from London after seeing Olympia horse show - absolutely fantastic! Great entertainment for all the family, WHY OH WHY the does the BBc not show it like they used to when I was a kid? The puissance was absolutely terrifying - even the whitakers couldn't jump 7'1"!! must admit, I am frozen and shattered and risked my life getting out of the snow to get there but it was so worth it. What struck me as being particularly lovely was the fact that showjumping is one of those rare sports where women/men of all ages could compete against each other - a great leveller!

You know its nearly Christmas when Olympia comes on. We watched some of it tonight on Euro sport. Brings back happy memories from my youth. Love the dog agility, its not just about the big names jumping big obstacles.

There was toy dog agility today - they were so well trained- I couldn't imagine getting my labrador to do any of that!. Jean Francoise and his white horses were there too, shetland grand national, mounted police force jumping through fire....

I saw the white horse one last year - he was amazing! How does he manage to control them all at such speed and with such precision? When they split to go over jumps on 2 sides I was stunned. So well trained and they obviously trust each other so much.

I love Olympia. I worked on a stall there for about three years running which is exhausting but great fun. I once got to see the household cavalry undressing too

Now that brings back happy memories. I used to go and watch the Puissance every year with a friend - it never ceases to amaze me how high they can jump.

Unfortunately, I really can't be bothered with the trek to London nowadays, but mainly because Mr. G hates it, and he's not horsey either. I'll have to have a chat with the mate I used to go with, and see about next year!

                Glad you enjoyed it Petal

Ellen is an amazing rider, but then she has had every opportunity with the family she has, lucky thing.
That horse really is a handful, apparently it was really calm in warm up, and only starts faffing about in the arena; but when they have a jump like that you can put up with a bit of messing about. As long as they leave the fence up, who cares how they behave on the way there. Might be a problem in a speed class though, lol.

Yeah behaviour like that is ok if you ride like a Whittaker. I would have been on the deck

Cant say I ride like a Whittaker, but I did figure out quite early on that it hurts a bit when you fall off, so it is much preferable to do all you can to stay on top
Had a few laughs (well it was the others laughing actually) because I was hanging on for grim death, dangling round the neck, hanging on to the martingale, one foot almost on the ground and the other swinging in the air somewhere. Happy days. I am past it now.

I agree, the whitakers are hard working and dedicated and I respect them. That grey mare of Ellens looked a nightmare to ride yet they showed images of her having a shoe replaced earlier in the evening and she was as quiet as a lamb, excited I expect, however i think if she concentrated she would of cleared that 7'1" easily. I would let her have a foal, they tend to settle down after.
