Went to morrisons to get milk and bread today, weaved my way around families buying as if shops are not going to be open for two weeks - i have never seen so many, rude, badly behaved kids in all my life! Hitting mums with wrapping paper, running up and down screaming - omg - if my two behaved like that! Now, i don't believe in spanked bums but..........

Sorry but I feel more pity for the stressed out Mums at this over commercialised and frantic season of the year.

As a mum myself, I agree but simple ground rules should be set, those elves are watching after all. I have a 13 and 9 year old and they know better. I just seem to see a lot of apathetic (or useless) parenting around me, yes having kids is knackering but rules ought to be rules and I for one refuse to be sucked in by commercialism!!! bah humbug!

It's down to bad parenting. But kids are not all like that.
I was at the hairdressers today and there was a girl with her daughter with her . The child was delightful, as are most children I meet.
At the risk of being shot down - big risk here - shop in more expensive stores - it prices the riff raff out. YEAH YEAH I know, but it's true. Sometimes you just have to pay for the people you don't want to be beside.

never tried myself, never had to with mine but boy oh boy did my hand twitch today at the sight of those nasty things people like to call their kids- no wonder there are so many problems at school these days - I saw no boundaries being set. And I don't care how tired parents think they are TOUGH!- I saw bad, really bad parenting all around me. Blood is boiling, still.......

One of my pet hates! When OH and I got together his boys were 9, 6, and 3. He was very relaxed and saw no harm in letting them run around a shop. Its irritated the life out of me, as my dad would have dealt out a short, single smack to mine and my sister's bum if either of us had done that. It got to the point where I made myself very unpopular with the boys by insisting they hold the trolley, touch nothing, and the youngest was not allowed out of the trolley seat. Refusing sweets/treats/refusing to take them at all on behaviour grounds worked a bit too!!
Pickle has never been allowed to run round a shop, and gets regular reminders not to start either! TBH, I'd rather shop without kids anyway
I'm not a perfect parent, but I am a real stickler for that.

And sometimes the middle class and upper class kids are the worst!

breath petal breath...feel better now - doesn't matter the 'class' there seem to be few ground rules in some families, no rhyme nor reason, they will reap what they so, mark my words.

My kids are older now, but when they were little I had to take them to the supermarket with me all the time (I had to take them everywhere with me when they weren't in school, had no one to help me with them). Anyway, I used to set them the task of trotting around the shop looking for items for me, so I could trundle up and down the aisles with my trolley without being constantly asked 'can we get .....' This worked well for me, and they would get a small reward for finding everything I set them to find. Usually the reward was a comic, or some 'special' fruit, like strawberries or kiwis. Now and again it would be sweets, but not often. And they knew that they had to walk not run and not get in anyone's way. I often received comments on how well behaved they were from other shoppers and some of the staff.
Not all kids are badly behaved and it is really not the fault of those kids who are... they have not received guidance on how to behave appropriately is all.
I have had plenty of experience of these badly behaved kids and there are times when I would like to put them all in a giant Borstal, but after I have had a rant, I go back to blaming the parents.
