yeah I think so.
Another thing (thanks Madasafish) - I found it easier to run on the ice than to walk.
There must be a scientific explanation, but it worked.

I think it's all to do with balance and how your foot strikes the ground.
When running your feet only hit the ground for a short period so if you do slide, you still have lots of forward momentum to keep bringing your other foot forward..

When walking, foot has lots of time on ground to slide..

I have fallen more often and injured myself worst in summer: run faster and harder so when I do fall... scraped hands, knees and blood..


Having said the above, running on pure ice is murderous and I avoid it at all costs.

I also think with running shoes you have a better feel for the surface and grip and adjust automatically. When walking soles tend to be heavier and thicker so less feel for the surface.

Having said all that , 3 weeks ago i ran down a pavement with black ice before the snow. I looked like a ballet dancer as I did a very ungainly pirouette when I slipped and skidded... but managed to keep my balance and ran on: trying to run n the less slippery bits near the (bramble and prickly) hedge...

My colleague at work invested in some spikey elasticated contraptions affixed to her walking boots to stop her sliding. These worked admirably until Tuesday. She made it into work safely, but the corridors were wet from everyones boots. She fell almost outside her office and broke her wrist. I've yet to find out if she's blaming the wet corridor or the contraptions on her boots.

A friend of ours slipped at work today and broke his leg in two places - now in Hospital awaiting an op tomorrow. He should be at a funeral tomorrow too!

That's awful Glutton, poor guy. It's O.K. us laughing at the funny stories but there are lots of poor people who have been badly hurt recently.
On the news tonight they'd set up a camera on a street & filmed several people slipping, then I thought 'that's a bit cruel really, they set up the camera because the path was icy there & just filmed it instead of warning people or gritting/salting the path!'
On the subject of 'comedy' falls though the other week I'd just bought a new pair of flat 'biker' style boots in the sales & went out in them thinking they'd be O.K. to walk in. I got out of the car in a car park & was nonchalantly walking down a slope, black ice, ended up on my bum in front of a lady just coming back from the ticket machine! She said she'd nearly gone flying too, nothing hurt but my pride & the boots have gone back in the box until the weather improves!

I carefully manovered (sp?) myself over the barbed wire, under the tree, down the slope to check on my visiting poorly sheep the otherday, I was just putting foot 2 back on the ground on the return attempt and woosh! next thing I am flat on my back in the snow and ice, the only real damage was to my hand which had a small barbed wire hole fight in the middle! The chooks seemed to find this all very amusing! One of the tamest actually stood beside me telling me to get up and stop being so silly!

Fell over twice within the space of a mile before christmas getting to work.
Have been wearing my walking boots this week, which has helped a lot, but still take it very carefully as they are useless on ice.

Just heard friend still not had his Op, and they probably won't do it at the weekend (I guess), so he'll be in a while longer. He's broken Tib and Fib and needs pinning! Mr. G went over on thursday and landed on his hand, so that was sore for a day, but, fingers crossed, nowt else so far...

Ouch Glutton That sounds horribly familiar Commiserations to your pal. They might operate at the weekend, especially if they're busy. One of my pinnings happened at the weekend I think.

Soooo glad I got my ice grips before they sold out! Be careful out there folks... If the path looks iffy, walk on the road!
