Last night in the pub I was having the same discussion when some salesman type told me how wrong I was. He insisted that high gear and low revs made the car skid. I could still hear his tyres kissing the same ice patch in the car park as I got to my front door. This morning I notice that his car is still there.

I love it when people just can't admit they're wrong, even to themselves. I might offer to pull him out with the truck, for a fee obviously.

Our car park at work seems to be a trap for some cars, but mainly BMWs apparently! Must be something to do with their weight and relative lack of traction, that or BMW drivers don't know how to 'feather' the throttle and just floor it, but they're wheel-spinning out there like Scooby-Doo being chased by a ghost!

It's more to do with being rear-wheel drive dude.

You'll find BM's, Mercs and Lexus' strwen about on days like this.

Or ex-MD used to put some of our havey products in the boot of his car to give him more traction (putting weight over the driving wheels). Seemed to help.

Try reversing your car up a slight incline and you'll get the picture.

Someone ditched a car opposite our house last night Harry. We noticed later that the interior light was left on, so we watched for them collecting it this morning to let them know the reason it wouldn't start. They were grateful and managed to contact some friends who brought jump leads. However, the driver's girlfriend wasn't in the good books as she'd turned on the interior light to check her make up before they abandoned the car and set off to walk!!

I had several BMWs. Wide tyres, and rear wheel drive do not make a good combination in snow.

When I was a student-- (a LONG time ago) I had an Austin A35 which had no power and narrow tyres. It went through all snow - this was Northern Scotland.

Low revs, gentle driving, steady speeds, keep momentum up hills and avoid big patches of deep snow.

Our road is used often as a shortcut. The number of stuck and abandoned cars(hill at both ends of our road) is brilliant!

my mondeo is front wheel drive and I got stuck 3 times.

My old Mondeo used to fishtail like mad, but it was brilliant compared to the Clio I have now

We live at the bottom of a steep hill, and constantly witness people trying to thrash their cars off the ice! It'll never work I tell you.
Also, why do people insist on driving 30cm away from the car in front when the roads are like this? Its just asking for trouble.

Just watched a lorry, two vans, a land rover and a clio all trying to get round each other on our single track road! Farmer eventually came down and towed one of the vans into our drive to try to ease the bottle neck! Stoopidy stoopid people!! They were all mucking about for about an hour when if the lorry had just reversed right down the road, all would have been clear in minutes!!

my van is not good in the snow, to much weight in the back and not enough on the front wheels.wellies truck on the other hand, its a godsend put in gear and it will go anywhere,plus with all the toys on it like heated front screen, heated seats and mirrors its luxury, ishall be pinching it for work tomorrow!!!!

Yay, I managed to skid off the road!
Not as nasty as it sounds, the corners of my street are pretty icy, but no-one parks on them, so I tend to give it a little throttle just to see what happens, I think it's nice to know how the car will react if it happens when I'm not expecting it.
This time though I tried braking fairly hard. Unsuprisingly she just kept going, although I was a tad suprised how far the car slid considering the very low speed I was doing. It eventually came to rest having turned through 90 degrees on the pavement.

All in the name of science!

surprisingly my little A class merc is doing just fine. Front wheel drive, manual gears and slightly flat tires have been working a treat - joy!

No probs at all in my Disco - all mod cons, heated everything and 4wd - OK it drinks a bit, but then so do I LOL!
