  • Has anyone tried Fitday.com? I think it's brilliant. I usually never need to drop more than a few pounds to keep my fighting weight, but I use Fitday when I do. It's got a good approach - you tap in the foods you eat all day - it shows you the breakdown of carbs/protein/fats etc. You can set a goal weight, and tap in the activities you do too. It basically encourages you to eat healthily and exercise (gee really?), but you can monitor your progress which some might find encouraging.

I've used it for years - I've got a good working knowledge of nutrition, and I like to see the little graphs and charts and goals stats It's a US site, and you sometimes have to fiddle with the food items when you input them, but you get used to it quickly. Anyway, works for me.

    • I can't get along with sweeteners in the ordinary way, but I find if I have just a tiny pinch of sugar, or tip-of-a-spoon of honey with half the 'proper' amount of sweetener that is fine. Splenda is the only one that works for me even so, and I don't know whether that is Atkin's-friendly.
I have (somewhere) a book about a "High Protein diet" and it describes a less harsh version, one which allows 1 orange per day as vitamin source, 1 small slice of wholemeal bread for roughage, and unlimited non-starchy veg, as well as all the protein food you want.
I could do that one if I was living alone, but not with someone in the house who wants biscuits and 'afters' (and with the backlog of Christmas goodies to use up).
I'm going to use the even smaller plates, make sure I account for EVERYTHING I eat, and hope it works!
On the drinks front, I like fruity 'herb' teas, but for simple thirst quenching I drink fizzy water, it helps make you feel full for no calories. I usually buy the cheapest in the shop, but occasionally I will treat myself to a bottle of San Pellegrino (not a VERY expensive one, and I find it nicer than most) to avoid the 'deprived feeling' that is so often a diet killer.

      • Have had a bit of a rubbish day today food-wise. Completely went off-piste for lunch... whoops!

Cheese savoury sandwich (brown bread), packet of McCoys crisps, diet coke, cadburys brunch bar.....

        Soup for tea tonight then!!!

            • I've just done 20 mins of my exercise video. Basically the warm up and a bit of the dancing. I really didn't want to, but I made myself, and glad I got it out of the way so I can now relax and not feel guilty all evening.

              • I'm doing a min of 30 mins on the CT every day, usually pre-breakfast, it is more for fit issues - any weight loss is a bonus.

Splenda is fine on Atkins, but I was told that bleach features somewhere in it's production, which rather put me off. I must say I haven't followed this up yet.

Thanks for the idea of San Pellegrino, Hilary. It actually has some taste and I love it. Have to wait until next week now as I am just back from my weekly shop.

I see that I should have chosen multi-quote!

                    • I love San Pellegrino - my favourite water. Second fave is Badoit - got a slightly salty tang that is way nicer than it sounds. I drink about 3 litres of sparkling water a day so I've switched to a cheaper one for everyday drinking - otherwise (almost) spending more on water than wine!

                      • I've just had a quick look on Google and it seems that Splenda is not all it was cracked up to be. The company were judged to have misled the public with their advertising and bleach is certainly an element in its production.
That's enough to make me stay clear of it. I don't think any artificial sweetener can be called healthy.

Three litres a day? Don't you spend all day on the loo?

No, not at all. Weird, I know. Constant source of bafflement - no idea where it goes! I feel really thirsty if I don't constantly have a glass on the go, but I suspect that's just habit.

                            • Okay, got on the scales at WW this evening (first meeting since before Christmas). I was expecting to still be a pound or two over my pre Christmas weight - but no - I'm two pounds lighter than my Pre Christmas weight - Coolio!!!

No I don't think any artificial sweetener is healthy, but they get used in tiny quantities, and Splenda is the only one that doesn't leave a nasty 'aftertaste' (and even then I have to be careful how I use it).
My preferred option is to drink less of the drinks I can't drink unsweetened, but that doesn't really work on an Atkin's style diet, and it is so easy to lose track!
My other trick is that honey is quite a lot sweeter for the same calories than sugar, so I sometimes have my coffee with honey instead.
