That's great, Becki! If you can lose 2lb without knowing it - and presumably while eating a much less restrained diet than usual - then you're really on the right track. Well done you.

Just saw your op thread. Hope all goes well and that you are up and about and feeling well again quickly. ((Hugs))

My preferred option is to drink less of the drinks I can't drink unsweetened, but that doesn't really work on an Atkin's style diet, and it is so easy to lose track!
My other trick is that honey is quite a lot sweeter for the same calories than sugar, so I sometimes have my coffee with honey instead.
Some years ago a friend questioned my using sweeteners as my diet was otherwise healthy if too plentiful. She suggested that I go without any sweetening in drinks for a week, then, if I really couldn't cope without a sweetener, to go back to a tiny amount of sugar. Sure that this wouldn't work I grudgingly agreed. The first three days were awful; I didn't enjoy any drink at all, but by the end of the week I couldn't abide the taste of sugar in a drink. It was worth a week of my life to change that habit.

I found much the same - except that my trigger was "Of course, sugar is addictive, you know". "Well I didn't, but I'm not getting addicted to anything!" I thought.

As you say - miserable at first, but sweetened tasted awful after a couple of weeks.

        • Hooray! My company is running a (subsidised) Scottish Slimmers meeting every Wednesday lunchtime from 27/1 for 6 weeks, then they'll look at the situation again.

I tend to find meetings a problem because I work erratic hours, often having to stay late and at weekend I have to do everything I can't get round to during the week! Lunchtime's perfect...

            • I am doing well today! Been out all morning wrestling with the toddlie in a toddlie gym thing so I have had a workout too! And no snacks today yet. It's friday so will be having half bottle wine later. Already counted points for that. And chilli tonight with tacos etc so need to not eat all afternoon to be able to really enjoy them.

Breakfast, one scone with jam and a banana, lunch, the last of the butternut soup, no points at all!

              • I had a cold sausage sandwich for breakfast (one slice of bread anda couple of chipolatas)
Did a training walk, my pedometer says 6.8 miles (not sure it was quite that far) and 400 calories burned in 2 hours, in the bladdy rain. Was fairly sweaty and hungry when I got home and had some quick noodles and a cuppa.

Dog hates getting wet, and she's still asleep under a blankie

                • I've heard all the 'try it without sugar' arguments. I'd rather go without the drink!
Tea is drinkable without sugar (not NICE but drinkable) and I can (just) remember when my Mum stopped taking sugar in tea (but certainly not coffee). Think is, there are so many OTHER sources of sugar (yes I know it is addictive, it is probably the most common addiction on the planet) in the 'pleasure' side of my diet, that I can't see getting anywhere abandoning sweetened drinks unless I also give up ALL cakes, biscuits, chocolate etc FOR LIFE, and that thought is so depressing that I comfort eat as soon as I consider it!
For me Atkin's and similar would work if the stuff was not in the house (so would going without all sweetened things, probably) but living with someone whose response to a LARGE main meal is "what's for afters?" puts it out of my reach (it was hard enough saying "no" to another chocolate for the umpteenth time after EVERY supper over Christmas, how I only gained 2lbs I will never know!) He is so persistent!

                  • It's day 4 or 5 of my get-healthy plan, and I'm fed up. I've been rained on every day this week while cycling to school & am coming down with a cold too.
I'm trying so hard not to cheat, but last night I had half a bottle of wine (although I left half my dinner, so extra cals weren't a worry), and I'm going to have the other half in a minute.

I'd really love a jacket spud loaded with Brie, but I'm going to have low-fat tomato sauce instead. I should be doing my exercise DVD, but really can't be arrised to get all sweaty.

It's really hard in the winter isn't it?

edit: I told myself I couldn't have any dinner until I did my DVD, so I did 15 mins of it. Funny thing was, I wasn't starving afterwards, it must have shrunk my stomach or something, so I ended up eating less as well

Yup, was really enjoying my walk till it started lashing down. Then me and the dog were both cold and miserable until we got home. On the plus side, the waterproofing on my boots and jacket is good.

This is a first for me since I started putting the weight back on!

Looking forward to my chilli and wine...

                        • Well done Jane, you'll soon lose the taste for (habit of) snacking

PS. are you doing yourself a sticker chart or a reward box? (put marbles in a jar, one for every day you're good: then reward yourself when the jar is full. New seeds or something).

I KNOW what the problem is, I figured it out the other day. I had NO problems with snacking until we moved house and knocked the rooms through. Now I am literally in the area with the kitchen in all the time, as it is the only room. I am much better if I go out all day!

Quick, put those walls back up!!!

That's what I did, Hilary. Not for life, but I just hate 'things' being in charge of me. (Don't like automatic cars or GPS either ) But then I'm (a) pig-headed and (b) not a sweet-tooth. Cheese now...

Pity about your OH. It does make things far harder. I sympathise with anybody not only having to have the temptation before them, but watch
someone else enjoying it! Can't you make him go outside - like smokers?!
