  • You're quite correct Hilary, getting motivated is hard, but when you see the weight start to go, then it will change your way of thinking a little.

I had put on a fair bit of weight in the last few years, so it was enough incentive for me. As it turned out, I visited a Doctor who helps in a weight management group, not to help me lose weight, but to help me put the brakes on when it's time to stop at my target weight.

    I'm almost there now.

On the whole I would agree with you, mcsee, but there are those unfortunate peeps who cannot exercise in any way that will enable them to lose weight. If you have ME, for instance, exercise will make you even more ill. There are other conditions too that limit the ability to exercise.
However, it is possible to lose weight just by restructuring your diet if you come into the above category - it will probably take a bit longer than for those who can bounce about, of course. I have ME and arthritis in my lower joints and am losing steadily on the Atkins diet - that's the one that suits me, I'm not advocating it for everyone. Choose your preferred diet and do what exercise you can. There's plenty of encouragement on this forum, so don't give up the diet because you can't walk far.

      • Morning all.... 6lbs lost to date

Yesterday was a bit awful, as we drove down to that London place, so it was sausage butties on the way down and eating out before we set off (grilled chicken sandwich though).

Did quite a bit of walking from to and from tube stations etc, so not too bad!!

However, my biggest motivator after yesterday, was going into Jane Norman with my sister to get her a top to cheer her up, and not being able to even try any thing on, as they don't do a size 18 (sis is a size 8). How depressing. It really gave me a kick up the backside, as I saw so many nice things and couldn't even try on (let alone buy!)

        • I dread to think what's happened to me this week! I've tried not to be too bad, but you know how it is when you're splatted out on the sofa.

I've just rung my WW leader to say I won't be able to help tonight afterall (too swollen to get dressed) - she was not a happybunny!!! Eeek!!!!

          • Well I went to class and lost a spectacularly disappointing half a pound.

Not impressed. But I guess it's better than putting half a pound on! I keep getting a pack of unopened butter out of the fridge and looking at it telling myself that lump of fat is no longer on my bottom.

And had bowl of homemade soup for lunch with no bread with it. Even though it's thursday and my head tells me points don't count on weigh day normally!

That's a big problem ... saving up all week to have a binge. OH does that when he's trying to lose weight. He reckons he's been good all week so he can eat all he likes at the weekend. Doesn't work.

                • Twas the month after Christmas and all through the house, nothing would fit me not even a blouse
The cookies I'd nibbled, the chocolate I'd taste, at the holiday parties had gone to my waist.
When I got on the scales there arose such a number, when I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber),
I'd remember the marvellous meals I'd prepared, the gravy and sauces and beef nicely rared,
The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese, and the way I'd never said, "No thank you, please"
As I dressed myself up in my husband's old shirt and prepared once again to do battle with dirt,
I said to myself, as only I can, "You can't spend the winter disguised as a man!"
So away with the last of the sour cream dip, get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip
Every last bit of food that I like must be banished, till all the additional ounces have vanished.
I will not have a cookie, not even a lick, I'll want only to chew on a celery stick.
I will not have hot sausages, corn bread, or pie, I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.
I'm hungry, I'm lonesome and life is a bore,
But surely that feeling's what January's for!

Sort of, we get weighed for free, and get a set amount per member through the door, which usually works out at about £3 per helper (can be around £5 on a really busy night). But we certainly earn that money. She's most peeved because she had a similar op before Christmas and was back to work 4 days later, but then she didn't have anything removed like what I did.

                            • I am joining you guys
Due to my spine op in august (Lumbar fusion with Dynesis hardware fitted to my spine) i have been rather inactive an i need to lose about a stone. I am limited in exercise, it all has to be low impact with no weights, an am having weekly hydrotherapy sessions via the physio team at the hospital to rehabilitate my spine an muscles. My new bionic spine pics,

I am going with a low carb diet because my thyroid gland does not work , so low carb is the ideal as it keeps the blood sugars more even, an so not allowing the insulin levels to go mad. Low fat will just put more strain on my system because the high amounts o sugar from simple carbs.
I know i sound like hipple the cripple but believe me after 5 months o healing i am chomping at the bit to get the strength back in my muscles again.
I am going to combine it with the yoga instruction on the Wii fit. Does anyone else use this? i am not up to keeping up with a fitness class yet. I need to drop a stone an tone up my muscles.
Low carb is yum. Tonight i have chicken breasts stuffed with cream cheese an wrapped in streaky bacon with a side salad. About 4 grams of carbs

                              bliss
