  • There's been very little mention of the RUGBY on here this time - there's usually a fair bit of banter to follow on the Vine, but not this time round, or maybe it's early days. Some good playing this weekend at times, too!

      • Hiyq. I've noticed there are quite a lot of you guys who are doing the Atkins (or at least versions of it). I'm not really wanting to go the whole hog, but do really want to lower my carb intake as it's way too high (healthy diet mainly, just too many spuds, rices, breads etc...). Quick question - how does fruit fit into this? I keep finding contradicting advice about it? Can anyone shed any light on this please?

        • Most ultra-low carb diets (Atkins is probably the most extreme, NO fruit and hardly any veg) allow a maximum of 1 orange per day and NO other fruit (The one I like allows you to take vit C tabs and have a different fruit, but NEVER banana).
You are allowed virtually unlimited green leafy veg (except on Atkins).

... but only at the start. You are gradually weaned onto such evils as fruit and veg as the weeks progress

            • Me, I've had a bad day. Just in case you were thinking I was a paragon.

I had a horrid 4 hour journey to hospital and back (with nonsensical ridiculous directions to the darn place that were just WRONG! How thick do you have to be to not include a MAP!!!)

Anyway. Got drenched (twice) and had to walk a couple of miles with heavy bags (my fault, bad planning). Missed lunch, missed snack, ended up grabbing a coffee and biscuit at 4pm. then a sandwich at 5pm. Starving hungry still at 7pm, so had a (healthy) curry. And a few wines. And some nuts. And some Cornetto. And some toast & Marmite.

See, that's what happens when you skip meals - you binge.

Forgot to buy Lemon D'oh! so had Limoncello and cream on t'others for dessert.
Still 2 left for tomorrow, now what's it to be?

                Diet starts again on Thursday

Veg, yes, some, once weight is on the way down, but Atkins definitely includes the term 'occasional fruits' for the maintenance diet. That is why I decided against it!

                  • I've been reading the posts and thinking 'Yes I've put on about 8lbs over Christmas so really should be making an effort, and I have... admittedly rather half heartedly, but it was Wake Up time today - I had to get measured for a new uniform at work and I was HORRIFIED surely the measurements were wrong. No, I have to face facts that I must really make an effort to lose weight and tone up.
I've told my OH who checked my measurements that these figures are on a 'need to know' basis and certainly not for the public domain. He has been warned!!

                    • Horrid day yesterday. Had only two hours sleep the previous night, up at 4.30 having been awake since 2.30 courtesy of ME, but didn't binge. Had breakfast and pruned the fuchsia hedge and southernwood but felt sick and dizzy so went back to bed until 3.45pm. Upside of this was that I missed lunch and did not feel hungry when I got up, so waited till dinner - and today I have lost another lb!!! Not saying it was worth 12 hours of misery, mind!

                      • Thanks for the help guys, I definately wont be doing the full Atkins then, can't stop fruit and veg totally no matter for how long, wouldn't know what else to eat! Another quick question - what about pulses - beans, lentils etc.... again I've been finding contradictory advice about how bad they are carb wise...

On the up side, I did a kale, brussel sprout, shallott and fennel seed stir fry last night instead of having spuds - absolutely yummy!!!

                            • I've had a better day, back on track. No exercise, bar a few squats & lunges when a good song comes on the radio - I've been too busy fixing things in house, but good healthy 3 meals & no booze.

My bloated tummy has fixed itself (a week early ). that would explain the cornetto binge too.

I can actually feel a muscle in my thigh behind my knee, instead of spludge. So something is working.

                              • I'm afraid that pulses are also heavy on carbs - soya beans at 6.2g per 110g, cooked, to haricot beans at 18.1g. On Atkins you don't touch them until the fourth stage, stay-slim eating, and then only in small quantities.
Fruit, however, is added in the second stage. This stage is where you work out how many carbs per day allow you to lose weight, and how many you need to eat to stay at the weight you've achieved. Then you are able to choose what you eat staying within your carb allowance.
The first two weeks are hard unless you are well motivated. This forum has kept me motivated longer than I have ever managed before. Thank you, folks!
