  • If you're trying to cut carbs none of the suggestions so far will really help you. Most 'diet' goodies merely cut down on fat, yoghourt has all the carbs that milk does and cereal bars, usually plus sugar or honey and sometimes fruit, are definitely not on your menu. Can you take a lunch box to work with you, Mac? If so you can fill it with cold meats, salad stuff and hard boiled eggs, saving some for a snack later on. I don't know if you're doing Atkins or not, but if you are you'll also find your energy increasing and your appetite diminishing which helps a lot!

    • I have finally managed to lose some weight this week!

      Lost 1.2 pounds - phew!!

Although I slightly overdid it on the exercise front yesterday (1hr aerobics class plus a 2 mile run), so I'm rather achy and sore this morning....

      • Well done OWG! Every pound lost makes you feel better and increases your resolve. Don't overdo the exercise; you don't want to end up too sore to move easily, sitting with your legs up and craving chocolate! Damaged muscles will also protect themselves with extra fluid, putting your weight up again, and you don't want that!

Not up on the low carb but I think when a friend was on it she used to make sure she had some cooked chicken, ham, cheese to nibble on. When I get evening munchies I'll air pop some popcorn, as that satisfies that hand to mouth need

Good going some scales you have if it tells you 1.2 pounds.

I had a 1 1/2 hr walk on the beach with the dog yesterday. I found this really cool large heavy driftwood piece, with a complete hole through a knot (man assisted), so carried it home one handed (dog lead in other) for 1/2 hour and my arm is a little tired today. Sure my neighbours wonder what their new neighbour is like, I am always beachcombing. Got a brilliant meshed type plastic fish box that'll be good for gathering above tide line seaweed, a watering can rose, some multi coloured fish net (not sure what I'll use ti for yet, but the previous owners left some bouys behind, so might make a sea theme bit in the garden..... Also plenty of washed up plastic and glass bottles, which really annoys me.

You're not alone elsie. I grow my veggies in fishboxes and sea-scoured oil drums collected by OH on his travels round our coastline. It has reached the point now where neighbours leave fishboxes and the like at my door! At least they seem to think I'm harmless.

            • Thanks for all the tips guys. Have brought in a couple of bits of cheese (I am so loving the fact that this is "allowed" as a a snack!) which will fill a gap before and after the tuna salad I'm having for lunch.

I was looking at all the drift wood and other bits and bobs which had been washed up on Aberdeen beach yesterday when I was out for my lunchtime walk! I wished I wasn't wearing my work suit and had a car bigger than a Fiesta! Oh the ideas......

Think we are in the harmless bracket, just classed as young (anyone who isn't retired!) incomers and city folk - because we moved from Aberdeen, even though OH was brought up in the western isles and then a few miles away in Fort William! They have all been very welcoming.

I like the fishbox growing idea, nice height for loads of things. That will make the "veggies only grow in rows" grower a few doors down really shake his head

                  • Digital Scales Query

Has anyone else had experience of swapping mechanical for digital scales?

It was my birthday last week and I decided to "treat" myself to a set of digital scales, which I bought on Monday.

My problem is that, with it being my birthday and all, I put on a couple of pounds over the weekend. I'm not so bothered about that as I expected it. Trouble is that the digital scales weigh about 3lb heavier than my rather old set and so I now weigh 5lb more than I did last week, back to my post Christmas start weight. (Although that means my start weight was actually 12stone 11.. gulp)

Should I just bite the bullet and record my weight as on the digital scales and accept the sudden jump on the graph to lose it or add the extra in a little bit at a time until it evens out?

                    I hope this makes sense.

                    • Perfect sense, Plot 10! It just depends on how you are feeling at the time - if I were you I'd bite the bullet - and move on from there! It would do my head in trying to remember all the adjustments and I know if it were me I would be kidding myself all the time!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Hehehe... I hadn't meant to do that much exercise actually!

A group of girls from work were heading to a 'Stretch & Tone' class and asked me if I'd like to come along... well, it sounded harmless enough! However it was rather more work than I'd imagined

Then, of course, I realised that I'm supposed to run Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday this week - so I decided to do that too!

I've been ravenous today actually, but have been fairly good so far.

Bowl of Bran Flakes for brekkie
'Eat Natural' museli bar for snack
Mushroom soup and a beef roll for lunch (bit of a treat!)
Home made curry for tea (no naan bread though!)

                        • Plot 10 - I would just start from the weight your new scales are too, you'll soon be dropping those pounds so just take the positives from that.

OWG - Stretch and Tone classes are flippin hard work! I used to go to them when I was a fitness instructor and they just about killed me!! I too thought that they would be nice and easy and a bit of a relaxation hour - no chance!!

I just went wedding outfit shopping and was cheered no end to see that I've dropped a size up top! Was able to try on lots of jackets and found one which fits like a glove - but should still fit well in 3 weeks when the wedding is and I will (note the positivity there!) have lost more weight! Was well chuffed, so thanks again for your support

                            That's the right attitude, Mac!

                              • Thanks for the advice re the scales.

Looking on the bright side I've still lost 5lb since mid-Jan, even if the starting point was a bit higher than I thought.

Even better, I've dropped a pound and a half overnight (might be because I've started trying to run a part of the way home). So hopefully it won't be long before I'm back on target. I've revised my target for March from 11 stone 10lb to 11s 12lb to be more realistic but I reckon I should be back on track by the end of April.
