It was an interesting show, I've noticed the 'mixed species' feeding flocks they were talking about, they all seem to arrive together, sparrows, wren, bluetits, blackbird, robin & starlings & potter around the garden squabbling over the food.
Into every life a little rain must fall.

and they expend so much energy chasing each other don't they, especially the robin whose got a grudge against the dunnock, and the army of blackbirds in openwarfare.

If they didn't fight so much they wouldn't have to eat so much either

I watched it with OH, and when Simon King was describing the fox mouse-hunting, we looked at each other and said "we saw one doing that yesterday morning."
While we were out walking dogs on a local hill Tuesday am, over the far side (maybe a quarter mile away) we spotted the fox, and yes, he (or more likely she) MUST have been mouse-hunting. It looks almost like a dance!
Same hill Wed morning, foxy was heading home to the far end of the woodland alongside the field, didn't see us until she was maybe 200yds away, then RACED the rest of the way across into the wood. 2 mins later a second (definitely bigger) fox heading towards the woodland. He wasn't going to be detered from going home by a couple of humans and 2 dogs either!
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

Exactly Becki, we've got a resident robin who goes potty chasing the sparrows & sometimes there'll be two sparrows happily nibbling away at the peanut feeder when they catch each other's eye & suddenly start taking chunks out of one another!

Re frozen ponds, I have a plastic ball floating on mine and supplement that when necessary with hot water from a kettle. This year I have found fish at the hole rather than hiding at the bottom.

I really enjoyed the programme, it was refreshing that it was more spontaneous and didn't have any of the repetitive threads that haunt SW and AW (and often cause me to switch off for a few days).

I enjoyed it as well, found the 1st 30 mins or so quiet depressing, but then Chris was saying it would be all alright, so I felt better. And it was.
