It can be argued that our personalities are a product of our environment - we absorb and interpret throughout our formative years and continue (to a lesser extent) as we get older.

By this ethos how boring would the first man (or woman) have had to have been, and how complex is the man (or woman) of tomorrow going to be?

Or - for those that believe in re-incarnation, do we take on part of our previous lives' personality and add our own spin.

My mother in law or Hagga Bagga as we call her has been absorbing and interpreting for getting on for eighty years and all it has turned her into is a miserable old hag.

If she had been the first woman on earth she'd have spent her time moaning that the apple wasn't red enough or sweet enough. Trust me, she'd have found the flaw in paradise.

Human beings are amazing, even though our whole human history will still end up being a tiny little rash of brief activity in the great story of the planet, the universe and everything, we're all full of hope, creativity and possibilities. Nice innit?

I think a lot of it is genetic, that's why I'm a neurotic mess like my mum!
On your thoughts about what the man & woman of the future's personalities will be like I'd suggest a lot more boring than today as there'll be very little 'face to face' interaction, everything will be conducted via computer &... oh blimey we're halfway there already!

I always liked the Jungian idea that we base our personality around 'hero' characters and simulate their actions to deal with similar situations. It explains why children often turn out like a combination of their parents and TV characters. I suspect the next generation will turn out as a combination of us and videogame characters.

I take after my father in liking nature, preferring quiet & solitude to noisy gatherings. I didn't even meet him until I was 26.

I take after my mum & my maternal grandfather in that I like veggie growing (although that took me 26 years to find out too)

When I'm arguing with Mr TS, he turns into his dad, and I can hear myself being 'mother' !
