I believe in what goes a round comes a round, you did a wonderful thing by being there and helping as much as you could, and as much as the little boy was upset as loosing his dog, he will also remember the kind lady who came out and did her best to help him and his dog. I hope you are feeling a bit better today. x

I THINK I hit a hedgehog once, can't be 100% certain and cried all the way home in the car in case I had.

I also thought you had to stop if you hit a dog.

It does also beg the question though as to why the dog was running around loose in the first place.

Well done you, for doing the DECENT and RIGHT thing. X I am sure the boy will also remember your kindness at the time.

"If you are involved in a road traffic accident and hit a dog causing injury or death, you must give your own and / or the vehicle owner's name and address, and the registration number of the vehicle to anyone having reasonable grounds for requiring them. If this is not possible, you must report the accident to the Police as soon as possible, but within 24 hours. This is a legal requirement under the Road Traffic Act 1988.

This requirement also applies to accidents involving cattle, horses, asses, mules, pigs, sheep, and goats; (but not cats and poultry). Therefore if you own or hold responsibility for such an animal, and it is considered to be the cause of such an accident, you could be held liable for any costs involved."

Some of you may recall that our cat was killed outside our home just over a year ago. My daughter was devastated and misses him dreadfully. It angers me so much to see the cars driving along that road at speed. Our land borders the A510 just as you enter the village, well after the 30mph sign yet a significant number of vehicle dont slow down enough - if they slow down at all! Unfortuanately the same law doesnt apply to cats as it does dogs and most people dont care. Wish NSB had been around when Ollie was hit, even if she couldnt have saved him, it would have been a comfort to know he died in the care of a person like her. Big (((((HUGS))))) hun.

Oh, a sad few days for you. Thank goodness you were there for the dog- it must have been very reassuring for him to be comforted in his last moments.
We need more peeps like you around xx

( and yes- I too can't understand why people let their dogs roam free near roads???- the drivers should have stopped- but swerving in the icy conditions could have caused human fatalities...why do some dog owners just not care about these consequences???)

Sorry, it's taken me a few attempts to word this reply with a few false starts but here goes....

When our cat got knocked over 2 years ago( that person never stopped either!), a neighbour a few doors down did not know who she belonged to took her to a vet after hours, the vet unfortunately had to put her to sleep. However, he and his kids printed flyers and went door to door popping flyers into each letter box and talked to as many people as possible until they found us. The peace of mind it gave that someone cared at the end made the world of difference to us. I still hurt with the loss, but knowing that someone cared for her to the end really did help. So NSB from someone who has been on the other side, a big heartfelt thank you that you cared enough to stop and be there!

What a terrible thing to happen, that will stay with that poor boy.
I think the people who did not stop are horible and i believe in karma.
What a wonderful person you are for stopping and being there.

What an awful thing to have happened, both to the little boy & the poor dog and yourself. As much as it was a harrowing experience for you, it was definately the right thing to do. May the other heartless people who didn't stop, especially those that hit the poor dog rot in hell.

My parent's little dog ran off from my OH when he was taking it round the park with our own a few months ago. It ran out of the park & crossed the main road outside it three times & at one point was running down the middle of the road before taking himself back to our house (impressive as he doesn't live here) where we caught him again. Poor OH nearly had heart failure but just couldn't catch him. It was a miracle that it wasn't hit or killed (or anyone else in the process) and it would break my heart to think that if someone was unfortunate enough to hit him that they wouldn't stop.

I read your post last night but have only just been able to reply as it stayed with me all night. I hope you are feeling a little better this morning, it must have been awful for you.

Actually you are the person in need of comfort at the moment. You must have been traumatised y the whole thing.
You sound like a very kind and caring person to me.

You definitely did the right thing in stopping, NSB, unlike those who didnt.
Dogs are animals at the end of the day, and even the best trained amongst them can suddenly not do as they are told and/or slip the lead, which could explain why the dog was near the road.
If you feel you want to go and see them NSB, then you should.
Traumatic experience all round, for the lad and you, hope you start to feel better soon.

Well done to NSB - you did all you could, please try to believe that. I totally appreciate that accidents happen, and even the best trained dog can for one reason or another slip it's lead, but I see so many dogs round here either out completely on their own, or walking without a lead way in front of or behind their owner that it makes me wonder whether their owners actually care about them at all. I don't believe in bad dogs, only inadequate owners, and your original post makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Staffy (prestige dog for some), living in a flat (proper accommodation for someone with a dog?), and dog out with a young boy, either with or without a lead. I so feel for you having to deal with the aftermath of the accident, and for the little boy who will never forget, but where was the responsible adult owner of this dog??
