Glad you put the [ish] bit in.
We have a hot line to call when we see potholes; I've not called any in myself as we have relatively good roads round here....have you tried this? Those who shout loudest.....and all that

We have huge holes at the end of the road from the last lot of freezing weather. Heaven knows what the will be like after this lot. Zazen is right, around March time our council starts digging holes and filling them again to avoid a clawback in the April budget.

        Too late!

We have really bad roads around here - everyone comments on it. I feel sorry for our local council they need all the money to build their big plush offices so that they can work in comfort. It's a shame they can't invest a little in the roads out here.

One of my biggest gripes is that once a year they'll come down our lane, scoop out the debris from the two holes and refill them with tarmac. Later that evening the farmer comes down in his tractor to feed the cows. This pushes the tarmac back out of the hole, so we're back to square one. In the long run it would be cheaper and far more effective to dig a proper square hole and fill it properly. Even if they had to close the lane for the day.

A couple of holes have appeared in our street this week due to the weather, we've got temporary traffic lights up & little diggers & blokes hanging around in hi-viz jackets!
The roads around here do have lots of potholes but a couple of years ago the council must have had a fit of conscience or a lot of money left in the budget & resurfaced a lot of the roads on our estate, can't have been done very well though as we now have the affore mentioned holes!
There is an experimental strip of road on a dual carriageway not far from us which I think used recycled tyres in the construction, it seems to have lasted quite a few years so maybe that's a good idea.

Rugby roads have never been brilliant but they look terrible at the moment. Also one of the slip roads on the M1 I went on this week had a huge pot hole on it I narrowly avoided, scary. Also parts of the motorway are now so ridged and bumpy they are in a really carp state.

Our single track roads are perennially potholed. Argyll and Bute council follow a policy of filling holes - but they might as well put their sandwiches in the hole for all the good it does! Once every couple of years a stretch of road will be resurfaced, but as soon as there is any heavy rain the road edges start to crumble. Also on single track roads you're constantly having to do emergency stops and reverse to a passing place to allow another car to pass and this digs up the tarmac. They are really not designed for heavy vehicles, but of course the fuel tankers, refuse collectors and timber wagons use them too. Whoever comes up with a solution will make a mint.

Our potholes were caused by a leaky water pipe that started gushing in the middle of december and was only mended just before the bad snow started. We had a road that was just an icy river for over 3 and a half weeks. I almost broke my blooming neck on it on boxing day. The road now has one long jagged pothole that runs from about halfway up the hill all the way down to the bottom. And with 10 years living here I know that the council will not be in any hurry to repair it.

On Thursday evenings local radion travel report, I heard abot a mahoosive pothole that had opened up in the Margate area - drivers were being advised to avoid that particular road as it had already badly damaged 6 cars!! Eeek!!

It seems we have a not-bad council. The town centre is full of road repairs!
Have to say that all the worst snow-damage is where there were repairs in the last year anyway.....
I wish they used the technique we saw on a minor road in Spain a while back, just a VERY think layer of something similar to bitumen, but faster 'setting', poured (out of a slow moving tipper-lorry), rolled, and the road closed for a few hours, job done! (that was over a hard natural surface, should be even easier over a concrete base)
