I have a rhodesian ridge back and as much as ive not had a minutes peace to myself in 6 years, she is my constant companion, she's very good with my niece who is 7 months old. My sister has two chocolate labs (mother and daughter) and they are amazing with the baby, and my niece just laughs and giggles all the time at them and follows them with her eyes everywhere (she crawled for the first time on Saturday). She loves them and doesnt even flinch when they bark at the postman!
Life isnt about surviving the storm.....But learning to dance in the rain.

My nephew and my youngest Boxer are about the same age, and Jake (nephew) says that Murphy is his bestest friend. Whenever he is round, he sits and talks to him all the time

HeyWayne, if you do decide on a G.B.G.V. go tothe Kennel Club accredited breeders website. That way you will know the pup has been carefully bred and has not come from a backyard breeder who has only bred for profit.

Noises are still being made about getting a dog.

There is usually nobody home on a Monday morning, Wednesday afternoon and all day on a Friday - though I can pop home at lunch time (any potential burglars reading this - be warned, our neighbours are always there, and very, very vigilant).

Anyone reckon it would still be ok to get a dog?

The first couple of weeks while you're house training and getting used to each other it is useful to be there most of the time. At the most I'd leave a young dog 4 hours. Sometimes Jake now gets left for longer but he is 6 now . Do you have nice neighbours who could pop in ?

We both work full time, and our dogs are fine; however, you'll need to be around 24/7 for at least a couple of weeks (more for a puppy) to help your new arrival settle in and find a routine.

A helpful neighbour etc, after that, would be useful!

Some old neighbours of ours were often out all day, leaving their dog home alone. They popped back at lunch time and gave him a quick walk but that was about it. They were also convinced the dog was fine, it wasn't and whined a lot while they were out. Personally I'd not be happy leaving a dog at home all day which is the main reason I don't have one. I know it can work out OK but you don't know until you've tried it and by then it can be too late.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

But it would only be a Friday (all day) by the sound of it and Wayne can pop in at lunchtime.
