Thanks TS. My free trial of AVG 9 has expired so I put back the free version. Whilst I am away my grandchildren may use my pc and I didn't want it left unprotected. When I am back I will try and sort the thing out properly. It's a bit weird because I cannot find any sign of Norton in programmes etc. but it must still be lurking about.

From what I can remember from when I tried to remove norton a few years back, they sneak the program into either hidden or hard to access files so that you can't just remove it yourself.

I had the same problem with AVG - I hadn't found the free one, rather the 'trial' AVG 9.

However, I decided to uninstall it, and as I tried to do that, it interrupted me and asked whether, instead of uninstalling completely, I would lke the free one.....I said yes, and it's been fine ever since.
