Deosil is clockwise in the northern hemisphere, or rather 'with the apparent motion of the sun', deosil is anti-clockwise, or 'against the apparent motion of the sun'. They have 'generally accepted' meanings, of luck and righteousness for Deosil and negative / evil connotations for widdershins, ie the sinister (latin for left) or left handed path!

Tho what the individual chooses to believe is of course for themself to decide!

Another way of saying anticlockwise or clockwise, that's all.

And I think its widdershins, MB (but I;m always ready to be corrected).

(Or am I having a CRAFT moment again?)[/QUOTE]

Don't know what Jennie's CRAFT moments consist of, but when my husband first started teaching he had an older colleague who always excused himself with "Have to go. Got a CRAFT class coming". Since this fellow taught French my husband was a bit mystified as to how he got all these craft classes - until he translated - cannie read and F----- thick. Not at all PC. What does CRAFT stand for now. Like to keep up with the world.

Yep, thats how I've always understood it in relation to the Magpie MB, as by going widdershins you scare it off from doing anything nasty, such as taking your shiney things, as Magpies are known to covet anythng shiny!

We've a pair of Pioten (welsh for Magpies) on our plot, havent yet caused us any problems, tho a few other plotholders have ex[ressed dislike at them!

Snadger will be back soon Dexter. They're losing 5:1 and the fans are walking out of the stadium. Some supporters.

If I see one magpie I always have to salute it. I can't remember who told me that, but it stops the sorrow/ bad luck. I know it's crap, but I can't stop, just incase it doesn't. I'm urmmm....can't remember the word....urmmm...superstitious, that's it.(been driving me mad, memory has just gone since having children, brain has gone to mush).

Hmm, my OH always says "Hello Captain" if he sees a single magpie. The reasons why are probably lost in the mists of time.

Widdershins and deosil - I must try and get them into the conversation at work! I do like to impress people (but they will probably know them anyway!).
Alice - mine was the cant remember a flipping thing CRAFT. Like the other one though.
