I would have a look around at the garden centres for a similar pot.......and ask someone there, on the pretence of buying one....not!

Danny I don't think the frosts on your patio in Tottenham are going to be that bad! I think there is some way of telling by the absorption rate of water on the clay - which will tell you how porous it is - but I'm not certain.

I think it helps with the frost problem if you put 'feet' under your pots, or is that with terracotta ones.

A little light googling and here we go:
You can tell how porous the pot is by letting drops of water soak into the plain clay - in this case possibly on the base of the pot. The blue glazed ones are probably quite porous but that shouldn't pose a frost problem if you shelter the pot. The cracking and breaking is caused by water freezing in the clay wall. This means that as long as the clay is kept dry (by the glaze itself or other protection) it should be safe.
If you are going to plant the pot, you can line the inside with bubblewrap which will protect the pot from any soil swelling as it freezes. You can also protect the outside with bubblewrap as well. As the pot narrows at the top, keep the soil below that section loosened and fluffed up so that there is air space to allow for expansion. And as Bren advises, put the pot up on feet to keep the drainage good.
And last of all - yes I do love freecycle!!!

Hi Folks,

Leading on from this can anyone offer some advice on what to plant in it?

Maybe something growing up and also something cascading down, not really into plants therefore any advice would be welcome
