I've been listening to Ian Brown's new album - Great lyrics, not the most complicated but sung(!) with conviction

I made a shrine, I made it for you
I see you are an angel
All the things that you do
    And now I found tomorrow
    With you I'm miles high
    Shining like a diamond
in the darkness of the sky

        Ahh the sunscreen song....

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will
philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize
that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were
noble and children respected their elders.

This is a frustrating thread, how do you pick just one song (or bit of a song!)?!

I'll go with this for now as I am a big fan of The Jam, though really there are so many songs that mean so many things to me - this is probably a bit maudlin...

Meet me on the wastelands - later this day,
We'll sit and talk and hold hands maybe,
For there's not much else to do in this drab and colourless
          place.
We'll sit amongst the rubber tyres,
          Amongst the discarded bric-a-brac,
People have no use for - amongst the smouldering embers of
          yesterday.

And when or if the sun shines,
          Lighting our once beautiful features,
We'll smile but only for seconds,
For to be caught smiling is to acknowledge life,
A brave but useless show of compassion,
And that is forbidden in this drab and colourless world.

Meet me on the wastelands - the ones behind,
The old houses - the ones - left standing pre-war -
The ones overshadowed by the monolith monstrosities -
          councils call homes.

And there amongst the sh*t - the dirty linen,
The holy Coca-Cola tins - the punctured footballs,
The ragged dolls - the rusting bicycles,
We'll sit and probably hold hands.

And watch the rain fall - watch it - watch it -
Tumble and fall - tumble and falling -
Like our lives - like our lives -
          Just like our lives.

We'll talk about the old days,
When the wasteland was release when we could play,
And think - without feeling guilty -
Meet me later but we'll have to hold hands.
Tumble and fall - tumble and falling -
Like our lives - like our lives -
          Exactly like our lives.
Excuse me, could we have an eel? You've got eels down your leg.

It reminds me of Rudyard Kipling's - If...

what ever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either
your choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s.
Enjoy your body, use it every way you can…
don’t be afraid of it, or what other people think of it,
it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own..
Dance…even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.
Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.
Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

I always thought this was wonderful as advice to youngsters (and possibly not so youngsters).

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat, but always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
                    I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin' might mean takin' chances, but they're worth takin'
Lovin'might be a mistake but it's worth makin'
Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter
When you come close to sellin'out, reconsider
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
                    I hope you dance

Time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along
Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder
                    where those years have gone.
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
                    Dance
                    I hope you dance

                    I Hope You Dance
                    by Lee Ann Womack

OK. I got a friend of mine, a consultant psychiatrist, to look at this thread and analyse it. He reckons that 47% of us are hung up on love and 53% on sadism and death.

"What" he asks, "is wrong with what is obviously the best song ever written?"

                      Money, money, money
                      Must be funny
                      In the rich man's world
                      Money, money, money
                      Always sunny
                      In the rich man's world
                      Aha-ahaaa
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
                      It's a rich man's world

Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?
                      >
                      >If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?

Not at all my taste in music, nor of my political persuasion, but what a fantastic line by Billy Bragg

"she's a dedicated swallower of fascism" (to the tune of "dedicated follower of fashion)

                        Also (and my fave)

"Through autumns golden gown we used to kick our way,
You always loved this time of year
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
                        Cos you're not here"

                        Autumns golden gown???? Brilliant.
                        Bob Leponge
Life's disappointments are so much harder to take if you don't know any swear words.

She gave to me her tenderness
                            Her friendship and her love
I see her face from time to time
                            There in the sky above
We grew up learning as we went
What a voyage our life could be
It took us through a wilderness
                            Into the calmest sea
Her smile could lift me from the pain
                            I often found within
She said some things I won't forget
She made a few bells ring
                            So simple her humility
                            Her beauty found in grace
                            Today she lives another life
                            In some fantastic place
She showed me how to raise a smile
Out of her bed of gloom
                            And in her garden sanctuary
                            A life began to bloom.
                            She visualised a world ahead
And planned how it would be
She left behind the strongest love
                            That lives eternally
I have the hope that when it's time
For me to come her way
That she'll be there to show me round
                            Whenever comes that day
Her love was life and happiness
And in her steps I trace
The way to live a better life
                            In some fantastic place

Some Fantastic place by Squeeze. A tribute to Maxine Barker who died of Leukemia and was long term friend to two of the band members. They 're not my fav. band but I think these lyrics are lovely.
