    There was a boy
    A very strange enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far, very far
    Over land and sea
    A little shy
    And sad of eye
    But very wise
    Was he

    And then one day
A magic day he passed my way
And while we spoke of many things, fools and kings
    This he said to me
    "The greatest thing
    You'll ever learn
    Is just to love
    And be loved
    In return"
Nature boy by Nat King Cole (my favourite version)

    And...

Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
    We all have sorrow
    But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow

Lean on me, when you're not strong
    And I'll be your friend
    I'll help you carry on
    For it won't be long
    'Til I'm gonna need
    Somebody to lean on.

Bill Withers, lean on me. Best go now, there's something in my eye
A garden is a lovesome thing, God wot! (Thomas Edward Brown)

        I hurt myself today,
to see if I still feel.
        I focus on the pain,
        the only thing that's real.
        The needle tears a hole,
        the old familiar sting.
Try to kill it all away,
        but I remember everything.
        What have I become?
        My sweetest friend.
        Everyone I know,
        goes away in the end.
And you could have it all,
        my empire of dirt.

        I will let you down,
        I will make you hurt.

I wear this crown of thorns,
        upon my liar's chair.
        Full of broken thoughts,
        I cannot repair.
        Beneath the stains of time,
        the feelings disappear.
        You are someone else.
        I am still right here.

        What have I become?
        My sweetest friend.
        Everyone I know,
        goes away in the end.
And you could have it all,
        my empire of dirt.

        I will let you down.
        I will make you hurt.

        If I could start again,
        a million miles away.
        I would keep myself.
        I would find a way.

        YouTube - Johnny Cash Hurt

Yes it's a Nine Inch Nails cover - but for me this is way and above the original.Recorded and video made when he knew that he was only weeks from his death.
There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it in your future.

Not sure I can pick a best lyric, but just love the sentiment of this:

"If I hadn't seen such riches I could live with being poor."

When I was at uni, we had to do an assignment on ourselves... favourite this and favourite that, what defines us, who we are etc etc. and then do a presentation to the rest of the group explaining it all. Anyway one of the things was favourite saying. I can't even remember what mine was, but one of the guys chose the above lyric and I have always remembered it as it was quite poignant at the time. Don't know if it's the best I have ever heard, but it stuck with me.

One of the other lads said "never trust a salesman in a beige suit"... not a lyric but that stuck with me too

Any part of 'Patience' by Guns n Roses. It's just lovely.

Shed a tear 'cause I'm missing you
                I'm still alright to smile
Girl, I think about you every day now
                'Was a time when I wasn't sure
But you set my mind at ease
There is no doubt you're in my heart now
                Said woman take it slow
                It'll work itself out fine
All we need is just a little patience
                Said Sugar make it slow
                And we'll come together fine
All we need is just a little patience
                (inhale) Patience...

I sit here on the stairs
                'Cause I'd rather be alone
If I can't have you right now, I'll wait dear
                Sometimes, I get so tense
But I can't speed up the time
But you know, love, there's one more thing to consider
                Said woman take it slow
And things will be just fine
You and I just used a little patience
                Said Sugar take the time
'Cause the lights are shining bright
You and I got what it takes to make it
                We wont fake it
                And never break it
                'Cause I cant take it
                ....

Just about anything written by Richard Ashcroft does it for me, and also lots of Metallica lyrics. But a particular favourite at the moments is Dan le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip's 'Letter from God to Man'

Hey There, how, how's it going?
                  Long time no see.
I know I haven't been around much lately
But... it didn't seem like you wanted me to be
The last time I sent down a message you nailed it to the cross
So I figured I'd just leave you to it, let you be your own boss

But I've been keeping an eye on you, I have,
And it's amazing how you've grown.
With your technological advances and the problems you've overthrown,
And all the beautiful art you've created with such grace and such finesse,
But I admit there are a few things I'm afraid have impressed me less.

So I'm writing to apologize for all the horrors committed in my name,
Although that was never what I intended,
I feel I should take my share of the blame.
All the good I tried to do was corrupted
When organised religion got into full swing,
What I thought were quite clear messages were taken to unusual extremes.
My teachings taken out of context to meet the agendas of others,
Interpretations taken to many different ways and hidden meanings discovered

Religion became a tool, for the weak to control the strong
With all these new morals and ethics, survival of the fittest was gone
No longer could the biggest man simply take whatever he needed
'Cause damnation was the price if certain rules were not heeded
Some of the deeds committed in my name
Just made me wonder were I went wrong.
Back at the start when I created this, the foundation seemed so strong.
See all the elements were already here, long before I began,
I just kind of put it all together
                  I didn't really think out a long-term plan.

I made the sun an appropriate distance and laid the stars across the sky
So you could navigate the globe or simply watch the sun rise
I covered the earth with plants and fruits,
Some for sustenance and some for beauty
I made the sun shine and the clouds rain
So their maintenance wasn't your duty
I tried to give each creature it's own attributes
                  Without making them enveloped
I gave you all you all your own space to
Grow and in your own way space to develop

I didn't know such development would cause rifts and jealousy
Cause you to war against each other and leave marks on this planet indelibly
You see, I wasn't really the creater, I was just the curator of nature
I want to get something straight with homosexuals right now: I don't hate ya
I was a simple being that happened to be the first to wield such powers
I just laid the ground, it was You that built the towers

It was You that invented bombs, and the fear that comes with them
And it was You that invented money, and the corrupt economic systems
You invented terms like just-war and terms like friendly fire
And it was You that didn't know
When to stop digging deeper, when to stop building higher
It was You that exhausted the resources I carefully laid out on this earth,
And it was You that even saw these
Problems coming but accredited them little worth
It was You that used my teachings for your own personal gain
And it was You that committed such tragedies,
Even though they were in my name

So I apologize for any mistakes I made, and when my words misconstrued
But this apology's to Mother Nature, cause I created YOU

Has to be the late great John Martyn - Couldn't love you more

If you kissed the sun right out of the sky for me
If you told me all the lies I might deserve
If you lay all night in the rain for me
Well, I couldn't love you more
                        Just couldn't love you more
                        I couldn't love you more.

If you loved me 'til my eyes got no more shine for you
If you walked beside me all the long way home
If you wasted all of your time on me
Well, I couldn't love you more
                        Just couldn't love you more
                        I couldn't love you more
                        Just couldn't love you more.

If you gave me all the things I'd never ask of you
If you showed me all the ways you have to cry
If you lay all night in the rain for me
                        I couldn't love you more
                        Just couldn't love you more
                        Just couldn't love you more.

A favourite of mine as I know the area very well....

                            Come away, human child
                            To the water
                            Come away, human child
To the water and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand
For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand

                            Where dips the rocky highland
Of sleuth wood in the lake
                            There lies a leafy island
                            Where flapping herons wake
                            The drowsy water rats;
There we’ve hid our faery vats
                            Full of berries
                            And of reddest stolen cherries

                            Come away, human child
                            To the water
                            Come away, human child
To the water and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand
For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand

Where the wave of moonlight glosses
The dim gray sands with light
                            Far off by furthest rosses
We foot it all the night
                            Weaving olden dances
                            Mingling hands and mingling glances
                            Till the moon has taken flight;
                            To and fro we leap
                            And chase the frothy bubbles
While the world is full of troubles
And is anxious in it’s sleep

                            Come away, human child
                            To the water
                            Come away, human child
To the water and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand
For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand

                            Where the wandering water gushes
                            From the hills above glen-car
                            In pools among the rushes
The scarce could bathe a star
                            We seek for slumbering trout
                            And whispering in their ears
                            We give them unquiet dreams;
                            Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
                            Over the young streams

                            Away with us he’s going
                            The solemn-eyed:
He’ll hear no more the lowing
                            Of the calves on the warm hillside;
Or the kettle on the hob
                            Sing peace into his breast
Or see the brown mice bob
                            Around and around the oatmeal-chest

For he comes, the human child
                            To the water
                            He comes, the human child
To the water and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand
From a world more full of weeping than he can understand
                            Human child
                            Human child
With a faery, hand in hand
From a world more full of weeping than he can understand...
                            Than he can understand...
                            He can understand...

Waterboys - The Stolen Child, which is basically the poem by WB Yeats

Seconded - These Are The Days of Our Lives by Queen. Not a single line of lyric or melody isnt touched with sadness and hope in that song. Absolutely beautiful.

Underneath the Stars, by Kate Rusby. In fact, there are so many wonderful lyrics written by Kate that it's hard to know which to choose.

Underneath the stars I'll meet you
Underneath the stars I'll greet you
There beneath the stars I'll leave you
Before you go of your own free will

                              Go gently

Underneath the stars you met me
Underneath the stars you left me
I wonder if the stars regret me
At least you'll go of your own free will

                              Go gently

Here beneath the stars I'm landing
And here beneath the stars not ending
Why on earth am I pretending?
I'm here again, the stars befriending
They come and go of their own free will

                              Go gently
                              Go gently

Underneath the stars you met me
And Underneath the stars you left me
I wonder if the stars regret me
I'm sure they'd like me if they only met me
They come and go of their own free will

                              Go gently
                              Go gently
                              Go gently

                              ===========

And another, written about a family member and her husband who worked down the pits. When the colliery brass band come in, I fail to keep my eyes dry knowing that the lyrics have meaning beyond a good tune in the charts.

My Young Man - Kate Rusby

My young man wears a frown
With his eyes all closed and his head bowed down,
                              My young man never sleeps.
The rain it falls upon his back
The dust before his eyes is black,
Oft the times, oft the times my young man weeps.

My young man wears a coat,
Once, long ago, a bonnie coat
Which my young man wore with pride.
Now I dress the coat all on his back,
For love for him I will not lack,
But to see it now, that collier’s coat, I can’t abide.

My young man, where’s he gone?
Once in his eyes my whole world shone
Now my young man he looks away.
Man and wife we used to be
Now he’s like a child upon my knee
And in my arms I help my young man through the day.

A young girl no more am I
But I shall not weep and I will not cry,
For my young man needs me still.
                              If someone’s watching up above
You’ll see how much my dear I love,
So leave him here, I need him now and always will.
Oh if someone’s watching up above
You’ll see how much my dear I love,
And If he must go, let your best angels keep him well

I've always loved the lyrics to Annie Lennox's "Love Song For Vampire" from Bram Stokers "Dracula"

                                Come into these arms again
                                And lay your body down
The rhythm of this trembling heart
                                Is beating like a drum

It beats for you - It bleeds for you
It knows not how it sounds
For it is the drum of drums
It is the song of songs...

Once I had the rarest rose
                                That ever deigned to bloom.
                                Cruel winter chilled the bud
And stole my flower too soon.

                                Oh loneliness - oh hopelessness
To search the ends of time
For there is in all the world
                                No greater love than mine.

                                Love, oh love, oh love...
Still falls the rain... (still falls the rain)
                                Love, oh love, oh, love...
                                Still falls the night...
                                Love, oh love, oh love...
Be mine forever.... (be mine forever)
                                Love, oh love, oh love....

Let me be the only one
To keep you from the cold
Now the floor of heaven's lain
                                With stars of brightest gold

They shine for you - they shine for you
They burn for all to see
                                Come into these arms again
                                And set this spirit free.
