Why doesn't mine work!

If I want to add a smiley to a thread, or change the colour or size of type my computer - he say no.
I just get different letters. Like this in fact which is supposed to be a sad smiley
What AM I doing wrong!!
Is it me (actually - it probably is) but could somebody point me in the right direction please. Ta:

Just seen the smiley andn colour have appeared!!

It doesn't appear until you post the message.
If you want to make sure it's worked, select 'Go Advanced' and then 'Preview Post'.

When you type in a smiley you see brackets and colons etc. When that is transferred to the screen when you post, it shows as a smiley!
