G'Day HayleyB!
I'm no expert on tinnitus and am thankful that I don't suffer from it but I do know from other sufferers that it is worse when they are stressed. So trying to destress at night before retiring would help. You could try reading, listening to peaceful, soothing music (not that modern thumping stuff) or even taking some alcohol. I'm a wine connoisseur so having three glasses of red wine with my dinner and afterwards relaxes me very nicely as I do have a very stressful life and it would be even harder for me to get to sleep without it. Then there are the proven health benefits from red wine - lowering one's blood pressure. Don't forget that when we get older we frequently develop high blood pressure and once it sets in drugs are required for the rest of our lives. Another side effect of high blood pressure over many years is an enlarged heart and that opens the box for a number of other health issues to emerge.
I hope this helps.
Cheers.

Sarz is right, the soothing sounds and music do work to an extent. I used one for a while, but OH, who also has tinnitus, said it kept him awake so I had to stop.
You could try getting up, having a cuppa and doing something restful - reading, listening to the cd provided or other music which you know relaxes you, maybe some alcohol, although that will gee up some people instead of soothing them.
Whatever you do, it has to be better than lying in bed listening to the thumping, or ticking in my case, getting louder as you 'try' to go to sleep. You have my sympathy - it's horrible.

My way of dealing with tinitus is to take no notice of it some times i wake up with it it hangs about for a day or to then go's away againi have never taken anything for was told 20 years ago by a doctor there was no cure so i try to ignore it some times it works and sometime it don't....jacobWhat lies behind us,And what lies before us,Are tiny matters compared to what lies Within us ...

Gone from a high pitched squeal to low rumble today, been on and off for weeks it was loud last night and that WAS after a bottle and a third of red vino not enough for callapso though
May try to get an appointment at docs next week as I reckon my BP may be high anyway (giddy spells when rollover in beds or stand up) - I don't like getting old...Hayley B

I've just got over 7 weeks with blocked Eustachian Tube and the accompanying Tinnitus and in the finish I ended up using Ear Drops from the Doctor which worked after 5 days. My balance was way out of whack and I found walking in a straight line difficult. Giddy spells were bad at times and being light headed most often would keep me home.
My 'noises' were like a synthesized drum for most part and was hard to describe when asked.I love growing tomatoes.

Poor you. I had it temporarily years ago - horrid. Mine was like footsteps running along a metal corridor - only way I could describe it.
There is a device that a client told me about that feeds a 'neutral noise' into your head, at a very slightly higher 'volume' than your tinnitus. He got tremendous relief from it, but wouldn't work for everyone I guess. I'll try to remember what it was called.I don't roll on Shabbos

I'm lucky in that I am able to tune out my whistling version. I only tend to ntoice it when someone mentions the subject or it is very quiet. As I have had it for as long as I can remember have probably just learned to live with it.
If it is bad enough to disrupt normal life then a medical opinion is a must.
Good Luck HayleyThe cats' valet.

High pitched squeal, have had it for years. I sometimes listen to music when I can't sleep as its about the only thing that seems to drown out the noise.
Alcohol will help you sleep but in my case it tends to intensify the noise in my ears.
Its a vicious circle and there's no cure for it.
And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I have it and some days it bothers me more than others. If I have a cold/have got overtired /trying too hard to get to sleep cos I have to get up early it is quite loud. I have a long term, recurrent ear problem that it has stemmed from, and also have blocked Eustachian tubes according to doc. Relaxing and falling asleep naturally - however late helps me a lot.
Was prescribed zopi for insomnia - the stuff is evil. I had to drop dose to half a tab, and that was enough to knock me out for 8 hours, tinnitus didn't bother me then as I was so zonked. A whole tab has me out within 5 mins, and feeling drunk on waking - decided its not for me!!!Kirsty b xx
