Hi Shirley, my O.H. is in Amsterdam on business at the moment too, he flew there yesterday morning just as the gales were building up & said it was a bumpy ride & then had a white-knuckle ride in a coach which was swaying from side to side in the wind! He's due back tonight, just hope his flight isn't delayed as a knock on effect. We've only had damage to the gate & plastic greenhouse & bits of damage in the street & have had a much easier time than some poor people.

Sorry to hear that you have all been having such a terrible time. Jools that must have been so frightening. I know we get fierce winds here, but we don't have any trees to contend with, the roads are smaller and buildings are built to stronger specifications (well most of the time). I can't imagine what it would be like to have a tree fall in front of the car.

When I went outside this morning to inspect our fallen down wall, I realised that next doors 20ft+ apple tree has blown over

It was huge, and a good fruiter, and is gone

I still can't believe that all our big fruit trees are standing. If the wind had the power to knock next-doors over, how come all ours are ok?

It certainly seems to be trees that do most of the damage.

Jennie when we went up to the Western Isles a few years ago, the lack of trees was very noticeable and the few that were there grew almost sideways due to the wind.

Yes PW - the few I have in the garden grow well until they poke their head above the wall and then grow horizontally! - if at all!

Flew down to Southampton with work yesterday morning, was fine in Manchester but the flight had been delayed due to problems in Southampton with high winds. Should have taken that as a hint, but no, still went down and had the sacriest landing ever. Got back there last night and found all flights back cancelled, was kind of pleased as didn't want another scary one so have just managed to get back after an unexpected stop in a travel lodge. Hadn't realised how bad it had been here until I saw a ton of damage to trees etc and caught up on work e-mails, apparently part of our office blew off!

I just cleared my driveway of 2 bin liners worth of rubbish which has been blown in, amongst which was lots of macdonalds packaging, the closet one is about 2 miles away! On the plus side, I noticed my iris have come through and are flowering, about 2 months earlier than last year!

And about 13 people were killed in wind related accidents so yes, the storm was pretty bad. My sympathy to all those families.

My sympathies also go out to all those hurt or lost in the recent weather, buildings can be repaired, financial losses tho not nice are always prefferab;e to human / animal casualties!

I popped dow to the plot before work this morning, to see how we fared, well, we still have a greenhouse, tho 15 of the glass panes had blown off and smashed, but other than that we dont appear to have done too badly!

A lot of the other plot holders fared much worse, one guy looks like he's lost both of his greenhouses, they were just tangled messes of aluminium and broken glass, I think 2 sheds have gone, one of the newer plotholders has lost their 2nd greenhouse (they lost the first one last week!) and most of the greenhouses have some panes missing / broken, I think there was one greenhouse that looked undamaged!

Looks like we'll be clearing up broken glass and cutting the clear acrylic Mr D scrounged from work to fit the greenhouse this weekend!

Then again, it could have been much much worse!

Glad I hadn't replaced the broken ones from before Xmas! ( ...see it does pay to be lazy sometimes!!! )
Garden full of logs as OH had day off and trundled round with his chainsaw!

We had a very close call with a very large tree which which fell in front of the car - about a car's length in front of the car! I had to break hard as it came crashing down. I had my three children in the car with me and we just sat there in silence, not being able to believe what had happened. So, I am feeling a very, very luck lady today.

So sorry for all of you who have suffered damage but, as has been said, we are all still here.

Jools, thank goodness you had time to brake!!! I went the long way round to do my horses yesterday to avoid all roads with trees.

SueA, hope your OH got home okay. I collected mine from Cardiff this morning at 10.30 - poor chap hasn't had any sleep. Hope your's had a better time. Apparently the flying bit was okay but the taking off and landing were 'interesting'! (think I would have had a different description)
