If he genuinely doesn't want any suprises or money spent, I'd go for some silly stuff. Jelly & icecream, balloons, paper hats, novelty cake (50 candles, of course!) 'pound shop' pressies etc.
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

A newspaper from the day of his birth works well in my experience.
Sent from my pc cos I don't have an i-phone.

After some discussion with Mr DDL, he has decided that he just wants a quiet birthday, no parties, no surprises, and any money he would like to go towards a new car for him.
Fair enough, its his birthday. Thanks for your ideas anyhow.
            * WARNING* My OH said this about his 40th . When he got as he requested he sulked for a week cos there was no fuss, or real big pressie. Make very sure that's what he actually wants. For his 50th we got him a rally driving day and he absolutely loved it.

Know what you mean B, shall keep having a little dig - maybe a small family getogether, and then maybe a friends one, but not one big "do". Methinks he is happy with the new car thing tho.
