  • What a Plonka!

I have posted this here so one of the Mods can put it in the correct forum.

We have loads of brilliant "do" tips on the vine but I can't find any "don't do" tips so I thought before the season gets underway I may start one.

Having cleaned up the propergator & trays I set to sowing some seeds on saturday, the trays looked great, all clean, the little plastic labels stood up like soldiers with the felt tip info on them........So I switched the prop on and watched as it slowly condensed.......Then last night, the Label Fairies came & wiped all the names off the labels (stop laughing)..................now I have 7 trays of seeds with no names so beware of the Label Fairies & don't use felt tip pens on plastic.............

Now I know why there's a little pencil in some packs of plastic labels.

Here's another: Don't make a makeshift bench in your greenhouse to squeeze more seedtrays in there, coz when it all falls down and there's trays and compost and seedling everywhere, you will realise that the money spent on a proper bench would have been well worth it... I write on masking tape, and put it on the containes in the prop - mainly because I thought that may happen, and didn't want to kill the seedlings by the ink?

won't the glue (and the tape) come off when you water?

if i'm planting more that one pot of the same thing I write on 1 plant label the variety, date etc & a number then just write the number on the corresponding pots with a CD marker pen, saves writing loads of labels and the pots dont seem to clean themselves like labels do

I use a decorators pasting table which can be folded up & stored in the shed when not in use.

Dont try and carry a tray full of newly sown leeks and talk on the phone at the same time. Seeds and compost end up all over the lounge Last year

do not try and carry 3 modules of seedlings across garden and down steps when you need only to carry 2.....bruised knees, seedlings and dirt everywhere and glaring husband....last year

If you grow seedlings on a windowsill which has a venetian blind, do make sure that the seed trays stand clear of the blind, or else when you pull the blind up in the morning, it will catch the edge of the seed tray and flip it off the windowsill... (me, last year, and most annoyingly, this year too. )

Oh dear, there was a lot of spilt compost last year. Keep them coming, I'm loving it.

Don't mix up your rotation system by going the wrong direction with one set of crops Me this year. In my defence I was confused by the addition of beds part way through last season.

The masking tape on the side of the 3" pots works well and I don't have a problem using this.

Don't let kittens have access to the window sills with trays on it.... loads of compost and mixed up seedlings ... me last year
