  • Avatar - Roses in December

Just going through some photos I took at Christmas, and though I'd use one as my Avatar - I wondered if anyone else had roses in full bloom during December. I'd never noticed them do this before, seems good enough evidence of global warming for me.....

Like your Avatar Muck Diva. I have a climbing rose on a south facing wall (Morning Jewel) and yes, usually I do have a few roses in December good enough to cut for the house for Christmas day. This year the blooms got a bit spoiled with the weather so not good enough to cut, but they were there.
The thermometer hanging on that wall said 15* this morning when the sun was shining, but the actual temp was only about 3*, so it is a very sheltered spot. Just a little micro climate .

We had a couple of roses in bloom in December and there is still one in flower now.

Had a few roses in bloom all year here, and I noticed a purple osteospermum with a flower on it just up the road - going by the forecast it won't last long though.

Its all backabout face here. I am still harvesting chillies on the plot. I have three "Gertrude Jeykll" roses that bloom on and off and a jasmine thats growing for Britain.

I will be very lightly pruning the roses shortly to get them into a good shape ready for spring and intend to prune out any remaining flowers to give the bushes a rest for a while.

Wow, chillies definitely seem a bit bizarre in January. I must confess, I know next to nothing about roses, but taking a picture of them on a really grey foggy day was quite surreal, even if they were a very late variety (must find out!)

Love your picture Muckdiva, you're right, it looks quite surreal, beautifully so because of the colours.
We don't have any roses here at the moment, but by neighbour has a climber which is nearly in bud, and I can remember by Grandfather having roses at December in Derbyshire many years ago, but that might have been because he had a sheltered garden.

How lovely. Great value if they've been flowering since June!
